PRETERITE TENSE The Preterite Tense is used to express completed past actions. It has specific uses: • • express a completed past action (“one & done”) narrate a series of completed past actions when an action began or ended interrupted a past action in progress

PRETERITE TENSE Yo form spelling changes • these changes only occur in the YO form. All other conjugations follow the rules for regular verbs. -car -gar -zar c→qu g→gu z→c practicar pagar almorzar practiqué pagué almorcé Why do you think these changes occur?

PRETERITE TENSE • Spelling changes -er and –ir verbs that have a stem that ends in a vowel will have a written accent in the tú/nosotros(as) forms, as well as an i→y spelling change in 3 rd person (él/ella/Ud. & ellos/ellas/Uds).

PRETERITE TENSE • Stem-changing verbs Only –ir verbs that stem change in the Present Tense will have a stem change in the Preterite Tense. There are only 2 types of stem changes in the Preterite: e: i and o: u • The stem change only occurs in the 3 rd person (él/ella/Ud. & ellos/ellas Uds. forms)
