During this half term, we will be working together to answer the following BIG QUESTION: What is special about London? __________________________________________ __________________________________________ _____________________ Using what you know already, can you try and answer our big question?

Our new topic, City Dwellers, will focus all about London. Where is London? Does anyone know? Why is London a special place in our country?

Where is London located? As many of us know, London is located in the south of the UK. However, now we are in Year 5, we need to be more precise with our geographical knowledge.

Here are the main 4 compass points. Can anyone tell me the other 4? Does anyone know how they got their names?

Where is London located? Using what you know about compass points, can you write a few sentences to describe where London is located within the United Kingdom? Remember to be as precise as you can!

Now we have located London, we are going to look at some of the cities famous landmarks. What is a landmark? A landmark is an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable. Landmarks will often have a sign with information explaining their importance. When you travel, pay close attention to finding new landmarks everywhere you go.

As we know from our definition, a landmark can be a physical feature, or a human feature. What is a physical feature? Physical features like seas, mountains and rivers are natural. They would be here even if there were no people around What is a human feature? Human features are things that have been built by humans and are used by them, for example roads.

TASK: Today, we are going to use digimaps to help us locate some of the different human and physical features around London. You will need to click on the link below to help you to navigate Digi -maps. https: //digimapforschools. edina. a c. uk/roam/map/schools

Once logged in, you will need to use the postcode for each of the landmarks to find it’s co-ordinates. Can anyone remember from our last topic how co-ordinates of a place are determined? You will then need to use your knowledge of human and physical features to determine whether the landmark is a physical or a human feature.

I want you to create the table on the following slide in your books. You will need to make sure to use a ruler! Can you find the geographical information for 6 of the landmarks? Can you find the geographical information for 8 of the landmarks? Can you find the geographical information for 10 of the landmarks? Can you find the geographical information for all of the landmarks listed?
