While there are many types and forms of puppets around the world, in American theater and television, three types of puppets are most frequently used. Hand Puppets Rod Puppets Marionettes © Presto Plans
The hand or glove puppet is the most common type used. The puppet consists of a cloth in the shape of a tube where the puppeteer puts his or her hand. The puppeteer uses his fingers and thumb to create a face and mouth that can form many different expressions. Some of these puppets use a rigid material around the mouth so the mouth can be easily opened and closed to simulate speech. © Presto Plans

Unlike the hand puppets, rod puppets are controlled from below by using rods made of wire or wood. Ordinarily, there is a main rod which supports the weight of the puppet and smaller rods are used to manipulate and move the parts of the puppets body. Some of the most popular puppets seen on television are a combination of hand rod puppets that sometimes require more than one puppeteer to operate. © Presto Plans

Marionettes are controlled by strings from above that are attached to various parts of the puppet’s body. The strings are operated from a wooden control bar from above. © Presto Plans
