Author: Lois Lowry was born in Hawaii in 1937, but spent most of her childhood in Pennsylvania. Because of her father’s employment as a dentist in World War II, she moved all around the world. She lived in New York, Massachusetts, and Tokyo! © Presto Plans
Author: Lois Lowry After high school, Lowry attended Brown University. She married a Naval officer in her sophomore year, dropped out of college, and moved to California. © Presto Plans
Author: Lois Lowry She ended up in Maine with four children under the age of five. After her children grew up, she went back to school and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Southern Maine. © Presto Plans
Author: Lois Lowry She wrote her first book after completing her BA in English Literature. She wrote a children’s book called “A Summer To Die” in 1977, and received the Newbery Medal for her novel The Giver in 1994. © Presto Plans

Novel Genre Number the Stars is considered a historical fiction because it contains fictional characters in an otherwise historical setting (Denmark during the Nazi occupation). © Presto Plans
Number The Stars Lois Lowry traveled to Copenhagen to conduct research and interviews for the novel. In fact, the picture of the girl on the cover was a photo she took what she was there. © Presto Plans
Number The Stars The novel contains historically accurate information because Lowry did a great deal of research on Denmark during the war. She learned about King Christian X riding the streets on his horse, the Danes sinking their own navy, rabbis warning Jews that the Nazis had their names, and the efforts of the Danish Resistance to get the Jewish population to Sweden. © Presto Plans
Number The Stars The main character of this novel is based on a girl named Annelise Platt, a friend of Lowry’s. She was a child in Denmark during WWII who told Lowry stories of what life was like at this time. © Presto Plans
Number The Stars The book has received numerous awards and has been one of the best-selling children's books of all time. In 2001, it was the 82 nd best-selling children’s book in the United States with sales of over 2 million. Sales have remained solid years after its first publication. © Presto Plans
