President Theodore Roosevelt “The Big Stick Diplomacy” • Believed in the West African saying “speak softly and carry a big stick” • Basic Idea 1. U. S. could oppose European Intervention in the Western Hemisphere. 2. U. S. could assume “police power” in any nation in the Western Hemisphere that was unstable or uncivilized • Example: – Used when U. S gained control of the Panama Canal – Collecting Dominican debt • The intentions of this diplomacy was to protect U. S. $ interests in Latin America • Roosevelt Corollary: Europeans are to keep out of western hemisphere

President William Taft “Dollar Diplomacy” • Believed in “Dollar Diplomacy” • Basic Idea: 1. Protect American money invested in other countries 2. use money and business to get your way in the world 3. Improve the economic status of Latin American countries. • Examples – 1912 Taft sent marines to Nicaragua to support pro-U. S. rebels that agreed to cooperate with the U. S. Once the new government was in place he forced Nicaragua to accept a loan from New York Bankers, which benefited American Interests.

President Woodrow Wilson “Moral Diplomacy” • Believed in “Moral Diplomacy” • Basic Idea: 1. use honesty and cooperation with foreign countries 2. U. S. has moral obligation to spread democracy • Example – Wilson supported leaders of other countries who he thought supported democracy.
