Persuasive Essay Outline • Introductory Paragraph Grab the reader’s attention by using a “hook. ” Give an overview of the argument. Close with a thesis statement that reveals the position to be argued using one element from each source. • Body Paragraphs Each body paragraph should focus on one piece of evidence. Within each paragraph, provide sufficient supporting detail. Opposing View Paragraph Describe and then refute the key points of the opposing view. • Concluding Paragraph Restate and reinforce thesis and supporting evidence.

Planning Your Persuasive Essay 1. Clearly state your position. What do you believe about the issue? What are your reasons for believing that way? 2. Consider your audience. What do your readers know about the issue? What are their opinions on it? 3. Gather support for your arguments. Where will you find the information you need from the source? What facts, statistics, examples, anecdotes, and quotations support your position? Which evidence is strongest? What support might people who object to your position present? How can you answer those objections?
