MOTIVATION Motivation is an internal process that directs and maintains behavior. Motivation is an internal process that can cause someone to move towards a certain goal.
• A person who is motivated by money may desire to work more hours for higher pay, or accept a job as a salesperson in which the pay is based on the number of products sold • A person who is motivated by the desire for self-expression may decide to become a writer may spend many hours writing stories. • A person who is motivated by the need to find meaning in life may prefer to have a job that is higher in meaning and lower in pay than a job that is higher in pay and lower in meaning.

Focus on performance improvement Help people to enrich their work and you will truly motivate. Encourage and help people to grow and develop, and performance improvement is inevitable.
Develop a self managing team Your responsibility as leader is to develop your team so that it can take on more and more of your own responsibility. A mature team should be virtually self-managing, leaving you free to concentrate on all the job-enhancing strategic aspects that yourself need in order to keep motivated and developing.

Recognize intrinsic factors which motivate people Leaders must recognize that people are different only in so far as the different particular 'intrinsic' factors which motivate each person, but in so far as we are all motivated by 'intrinsic' factors, we are all the same
Be an effective communicator Always talk to your staff openly and honestly. Host occasional informal gettogethers in effort to discuss situations and upcoming events. Always be sure that the entire staff is included when holding this type of meeting. Never leave the responsibility of communication to someone else.
Be involved Principals can be a part of the classroom by occasionally coming in to spend quality time with the children. By doing this, the principal is not only making herself available to the students but is also seeing what the teacher sees on a daily basis. This is a good exercise to do if there is a particular, recurring problem in the classroom.
Hold contests Throughout the school year, hold fun-filled contests to encourage the teachers to work for a prize, such as "Best Classroom Decor. " Just like the students, when teachers are motivated to win a prize, they will tend to work harder and more efficiently.
