DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 AGENDA • • • What is in it for You? The Hypothesis The Course The Students The Outcomes / Conclusions
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 What is in it for You? Digital learning in further education is closing in on you This presentation focusses on Team based learning with online teams Worth considering when designing online courses Your take-away: • Pros and cons in online team based learning • Understanding students’ response to online “virtual” teams • Inspiration and food for thought
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The Hypothesis 1. Technology has advanced to the point where digital tools allow all students to work efficiently online. 2. Online team based learning allows students to study internationally without having to relocate 3. Virtual teams have social relation constraints – but this is not crucial 4. Learning outcomes/course efficiency of a fully digitalized and teambased course is same as a traditional course – everything else alike. 5. Students do not mind working together online 6. Digital course format removes barriers for joint university teaching
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 Hence: the DMCT Course Concept Digital Multi-University Cross-cultural Team-based Course-format Blended learning with synchronous part rendered as an online seminar => 100% digital 1. Multi-university - since universities can pool resources very easily 2. Cross-cultural - since students come from UTC ± 5 (10 hours time zone gab) 3. Team-based – since students work online in virtual teams
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 5 ECTS special course Online throughout – with Adobe Connect Conference Platform 21 students enrolled – including 5 from Queen’s University, Belfast 5 groups created with CATME 13 online seminars 14 video lectures 6 digital assignments – 3 were graded with Peer. Grade Gamification: 3 contests. Course grading: Passed/Non-passed via digital participation monitoring
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course Students 1. 2. 3. 4. Master students, engineering 17 DTU students, 5 QUB students 5 multi-cultural and dispersed teams Geographical coverage: Vancouver – Yucatan – Belfast – Munich – Copenhagen 5. Cultural coverage: Greece, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Mexico, France, United Kingdom, China, Germany
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course Outcomes 1. Score on learning objectives: 4. 2 on a scale from 1 to 5. 2. Learning efficiency compared to blended learning: little less 3. Virtual teamwork efficiency compared to normal team work: pros and cons balance 4. What surprised us: 1. Students appraised the flexibility that comes with virtual teamwork 2. Students appraised the opportunity to work across culture and university borders “just like that” 3. Students appraised the online seminars and the video lectures
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course Outcomes versus hypothesis – A 1. Technology has advanced to the point where digital tools allow all students to work online. We are almost there 2. Online teams allow students to work closely together independent of distance => they do not have to relocate Confirmed
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course Outcomes versus hypothesis – B 3. Virtual teams have social relation constraints, but these are not crucal. Confirmed – and virtual teams find their own modus vivendi 4. Learning outcomes/course efficiency of a fully digitalized and teambased course is same as a traditional course – everything else alike Not quite, but close enough
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course Outcomes versus hypothesis – C 5. Students do not mind working together online They prefer physical presence but confirm that virtual teamwork offers benefits that balance against the tradeoffs 6. Digital course format removes barriers for joint university teaching If Queen’s University is not a special case, the answer is YES
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course The Pros 1. Universities can join forces and resources to offer top notch courses that they would never be able to run alone. 2. Students do not need to relocate to join teaching at foreign universities 3. The DMCT format offers unprecedented flexibility in group work and production of teaching materials (video lectures, pre-readings, assignments) 4. The DMCT format offers savings on travels and physical facilities
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course The Cons 1. Significant investments in implementation: a. Complete transformation of course format, plans and teaching materials b. New competences within video production and online seminar hosting 2. Significant drop in direct teacher-student interaction 3. Probably best suited for “lyric” courses.
DMCT – Course “Entrepreneurship” Fall 2017 The DTU DMCT Course To wrap up: 1. On-line team-based course: technology allows it 2. Students accept it – and appraise some of the learning outcomes 3. Cross-university collaboration easy within this format To consider: 1. 2. 3. 4. Can it be scaled up? E. g. to MOOC level? Considerable development work outstanding in course management Will it reduce international student exchange Will it work in life long learning? Most certainly – with considerable advantages
