Speeches that inform; n Explains; – What it means – How it works – How it’s done n The goal is to; • Be clear and accurate • Make experience as enjoyable as possible

Speeches that entertain. . . n Provide enjoyment n (Don’t have to be funny) n Best when; • Light • Original • Appropriate to; – Occasion – Audience

Speeches that persuade. . . n Aim to; – Change attitudes or behaviour – Gain acceptance of a point of view n They should; – Present evidence and arguments – Include a request for action

‘Specific Purpose’ n What is to be achieved n Write a ‘purpose statement’

The purpose statement, the goal; n Aim to have an effect on your audience. n What do you want them to Think/Do? n Limit to one thing, dual aims are weaker n Make a statement, a question is weaker n Be concise and carefully word, this will • Clarify your thoughts • Clearly indicate you attention

Example – Topic: Lateness – General purpose: Persuade – Specific purpose: To motivate students to arrive on time, and stay – Thesis: • There are long term benefits in attending classes on time, they outweigh the short term ones; – Practice at self discipline – Chance of learning skills that will benefit later – Increases chance of employment recommendation
