The sierra Leone Ports Authority was a creature of a Statute, the Ports Act

The sierra Leone Ports Authority was a creature of a Statute, the Ports Act of 1964. This Act has gone through several amendments in the past, and most recent was in 2003, when some of its functions were ceded to the Sierra Leone Maritime Administration. S

EMPLOYMENT WITH THE PORTS S Employment with the Ports is governed by the forces

EMPLOYMENT WITH THE PORTS S Employment with the Ports is governed by the forces of demand supply and entirely with the rules of contract law. S There are basically two sets of employees at the Authority, the professional groups and the general services group S The professional group is divided into professional levels of P 1 to P 5, whilst P 1 is the highest level and P 5 in the Minimum. The General Manager is usually placed at the P 1 Level.

ALLOWANCES q It comprises transportation/ car allowance, rent allowance, risk allowances, clothing allowances, leave

ALLOWANCES q It comprises transportation/ car allowance, rent allowance, risk allowances, clothing allowances, leave allowance which is 30% of the net salary of the employee and if the employee is asked by his supervisor to work at night (except security personnel), he shall be paid a night allowance. S There are other allowance which have been removed and replaced with service provisions, such as medical allowance; this has been removed and replaced by medical insurance.

APPRAISAL OF EMPLOYEES u This is usually done by the immediate supervisor of the employee to the Human Resource Committee, who will discuss the appraisal and then forward to the Management Committee for review. After it has been reviewed it will then be submitted to the General Manager for approval. If the employee is a Professional Staff, it is the Board of Director who will approve his promotion. S If there is no opportunity for promotion, then the salary of the employee will be increased, that is moving him from a lower scale of the Authority’s Salary Scale, to a higher scale.

He can be redundant’ u. He can be terminated u. He can be dismissed u. For all the first four in the list, the employee may ben entitled to at least one severance package, either an end of service benefits or a redundance benefit. S
