What is 4 -H Presentation? A presentation is a method used to communicate an idea or topic by showing, telling, or expressing your opinion. A presentation may be a demonstration, a talk, a speech, or a skit. A 4 -H Presentation helps you learn to: ü Research a Subject ü Organize the idea in a logical order ü Share your SPARK or your passions
9 Steps to Presenting 1. Choose the subject matter you wish to present 2. Determine who the intended audience is 3. Determine the purpose of your presentation 4. Research your topic 5. Develop an outline of your presentation 6. Develop a title 7. Prepare your material for the presentation 8. Practice giving your presentation 9. Prepare for questions
Types of Presentations
Demonstration ü Is doing ü Showing how. As you show how, you tell how. -------------------------------------------------------- • Minimum of 4 posters or slides should be used. • Visual Aids are encouraged • Length • 3 minutes [Individual Primary] • 15 minutes [senior Individual or team presentation] • Note Cards are not allowed by speakers.
Illustrated Talk ü Is telling how with the aid of visuals ü You use charts, posters, photos, computer programs, slides, pictures, models, or cut outs. ü Should clearly identify each section [intro, main body, conclusion]. --------------------------------------------------------------------- • Minimum of 3 posters or slides [ should include Intro/ Title, Information, Summary] • Visual Aids are encouraged • Note Cards are not allowed by speakers. • Length • 3 minutes [Individual Primary] • 15 minutes [senior Individual or team presentation]
Science or Engineering Presentation ü Emphasizes the core process of the scientific method. ü Uses the process of design to plan, build, and test a process, system or device. ü Engineers must weigh design choices based on merits, constraints and aesthetics to meet design specifications and able to justify those choices. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Minimum of 5 slides or posters [include: intro/title, background, methods, results, discussion] • Visual Aids are allowed • Length: – 3 minutes [Individual Primary] – 15 minutes [Senior Individual or Team Presentation] • Note cards are not allowed
Educational Display Talk ü An educational display talk is an organized visual presentation of a program or a concept. ü Once the speaker completes the oral presentation, they will have a dialog with the evaluators about the display --------------------------------------------------------------------- • Card Table Display (approximately 30”x 30”) • Panel Display (approximately 4’x 4’) • Length: • 3 -5 minutes, dialogue with evaluators follow. • Note cards are not allowed
Informative Prepared Speech ü The speaker will inform or educate the audience on a single issue or topic. ü The purpose of this category is to encourage participants to give a speech in which they seek out accurate information, organize it into a useful form, and competently present the information. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- • No posters or slides • No visual aids • Length: 2 -5 minutes (can be extended to 10 minutes) • Only evaluators may ask questions • Notes on a 5”X 7” card (single side). It should be inconspicuous and not detract from the speech
Persuasive Prepared Speech ü purpose of a persuasive prepared speech is to sway, convince, and influence, not simply to argue. --------------------------------------------------------------------- • Posters and Slides are allowed- not required • Length: 3 -8 minutes (can be extended to 15 minutes) • One 5”X 7” note card (single sided) may be used; however, it should not be read or relied upon heavily. • Only evaluators may ask questions • Speakers are encouraged to relate the presentation to current 4 -H activities or their spark.
Impromptu Speech ü involves speeches that the speaker has developed themselves at the Presentation Day within a threeminute preparation. ü One at a time, the speakers will randomly draw a piece of paper with a topic on it. ü The topics will be developed from the pre-announced categories for the event. From the time that the speaker is given the topic, they will have three minutes to prepare a speech. --------------------------------------------------------------------- • At State 4 -H Presentation Day, participation in Impromptu Speeches is limited to Intermediate and Senior 4 -H members. • No Posters, Slides or Visual Aids allowed • Length: 2 -5 minutes • There will be no questions during this category • The speaker is allowed one 5”x 7” note card (single sided) to collect the results of the research on each topic. The speaker may use their 5”x 7” note card during the delivery of the impromptu speech.
Interpretive Reading ü Speakers may read any published written work that is age appropriate and acceptable for use in a public school classroom ü speaker should demonstrate knowledge about the reading selection by describing the title, the author, the characters, the purpose or setting of the writing, and any other introductory information ü The speaker creates the characters and the setting through voice inflection and hand gestures. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Posters, Slides and Visual Aids are not allowed • Length: 5 minutes is sufficient-no more than 10 minutes • Only evaluators ask questions • The speaker may read from either the original publication or a photocopy held in a portfolio. No notecards allowed
Share the 4 -H Fun Skits ü Groups perform acts such as skits and other presentations that focus on health, safety, community pride, citizenship, science, engineering, or technology, or other 4 -H projects. The presentation must include a topic surrounding 4 -H ü Share the 4 -H Fun Skits, may but are not required to, include audience participation ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Posters and Slides are not required • Costumes, props, decorations, and other visual aids are encouraged • Length: no more than 15 minutes • No questions are asked • Notecards are not allowed
Cultural Arts ü Individual participants or groups, projects and clubs, perform a costumed dramatic reading, musical, dance, or other such performing art. ü Cultural Arts presentations may but are not required to include audience participation. ü A participant should introduce the activity and its purpose. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Posters and Slides not required • Costumes, props, decorations, and other visual aids are encouraged for this category • Length: no more than 15 minutes • No questions are asked • Notecards are not allowed

Tips for Posters & Digital Visual Aids • • Use bold letters for headings where you want to make a point. The use of plain lowercase letters makes charts easier to read. Use a font and large size letters that are easy to read from the back of the room. Make sure you have adequate color contrast. Lettering should be 1 ½ inches in height and/or 125 point text or larger Leave at least an inch between lines of text and an inch between each word Use bullet points to guide eye movement toward key points. • • Lettering should be at least 24 size font Keep text to a minimum. Use photographs and graphics that support the message of each slide. Avoid using pictures as backgrounds for slides
