PRESENTATION BY: GROUP 5
INTRODUCTION BRIEF HISTORY OF ART Art, in the first period of history began with the invention of writing, founded by the great civilizations of Near East: Egypt and Mesopotamia. This period differed from others because artistic manifestations occurred in every culture of all the continents. Art is created and enjoyed by many people and for many reasons. In any case , one of the primary functions of art is interpret the subject matter at hand which can also convey intense emotion.
CONT’D Art is a genuine aspect of development uniquely on its own can serve as a business to young entrepreneur. Sub sequentially , art is not considered as an important revenue to our country Ghana. It is neglected and not really concerned by government of Ghana. As a group we are taking into account the crafts as part of art , considering that art is broad (involving music , drama, movie etc. , ) Much care or attention is lacking, also not associated to mainly the Craftsmanship, where our discussion today would be centered on; Craftsmanship seems to have skipped a whole generation. Originally called artisans, these builders spent time shaping experiences with their hands. Although tools have changed, it doesn't mean the art of the craftsmanship has to be lost
PROBLEM STATEMENT Production and Marketing of Art & Craft in Relation to TQM.
PROBLEMS q Health issues q Lack of technologies q Poor storage facilities q Bad working environment q Lack of marketing platforms q Poor patronage
CONTENT DISCUSSION Ø HEALTH & SAFETY ISSUES The use of potassium per manganite for polishing the wooden surface of the wood works can be very hazardous to their health. ` The use of simple tools such as knives, chisel, hammer, sand papers and others may lead to serious injuries on the producers. E. g. The breaking of stones with hammer can make the little particles of the stones fall into their eyes causing eye defect in the near future. The sharp knives on the other hand comes with its own attack as well to the artisans and on making the whole work stressful and dangerous.
LACK OF MODERN TECHNOLOGIES Most of the work being produced are done using the manual system. Most of the productions here are done by the unskilled who have little idea about quality and use outmoded tools in their processes slows down production.
POOR STORAGE FACILITIES After production, storage of finished goods becomes a major problem. Often, products are stored under tattered sheds and these makes their products easily prone to bad weather conditions thereby leaving art works to deteriorate in no time.
BAD WORKING ENVIRONMENT The workshops of some of these artisans for production is not in its appropriate shape. And that which they have is faulty. ( has leakages in their roofs) as a result, they rather use shades from the branches of trees for production since they have no option.
LACK OF MARKETING PLATFORMS Furthermore, there are no formal means of advertising and no better way of exhibition which makes it difficult to reach out to mass number of customers. Their only way of advertising is through word of mouth
EFFECTS PHYSICAL INJURIES The use of simple tools without protective without any protective wears leave cuts , burns and other injuries on the producers leading to another cost in the treatment.
LOW EFFICIENCY Using simple tools in the production yields slow work. This delays the production process and hence achieves a lower work done in the long run.
EXTRA COST In addition, cost of quality in the workshops may lead to another cost on the producers. That is, when things are not properly done as a result of not storing the artifacts in safer places or not using right materials for the product, the producers may spend another money to fix or replace them.
LOW SALES Since there are no proper advertisement, it leads to low patronages of the products which slows the business because profit margin is always low. Also , the low in efficiency of workers may result in lower sales as well

SOLUTIONS “ All innovations [begin] as creative solutions, but not all creative solutions become innovations” – Richard fobes In view of this , the members of group 5 came up with the following creative solutions; ü Presence of regulatory bodies ü Modernized workshop ü Proper platform for marketing ü New mechanized way of production ü Proper storage facilities ü Protective clothes
PRESENCE OF REGULATORY BODIES The presence of regulatory bodies (mix of experienced art market professionals and professional investment advisors) would encourage the craft workers that they are one of the concerns of government, these bodies would set standard in which every product would meet before getting into the national and international market. The bodies would provide license to these people which make their customers witness their work as a legal one and as far as it meet the set standard, there would be some form of assurance to the product also quality is practiced.
MODERNIZED WORKSHOP The workshops of the craftsmen should be well built and furnished because, the environment of these workers sometimes tell consumers about their professionalism. These workshops should have the capability to preserve the artifacts and make customers as well as workers feel comfortable. This will lead to efficiency in production , thereby increasing sales. The quality of ones environment tells how quality that product will be.
PROPER PLATFORM FOR MARKETING The craftwork being produced should be exhibited to improve sales, placed online to reach mass people, arranged in museums for viewing. When these artifacts. The items being displayed mostly come along with tags talking about the specifications, inspection control, level of tolerance fittings, inspector control etc.
NEW MECHANIZED WAY OF PRODUCTION The use of simple tools makes the work processes inefficient and slow. This sends an image to the consumer, as such, the use of well equipped machinery (technology) makes work faster and effective meeting the needs of the customers at an easy pace.
PROPER STORAGE FACILITIES Most of the works produced are not properly stored and looks unattractive when displaced anyhow. They should therefore have a well built warehouse which can contain both furnished and unfurnished products. Since these works are stored in a well defined house, its being protected against the exposure of bad weather conditions and other insects that may act negatively on it. Durability of the piece is thereby assured fitting to its purpose to the consumers.
PROTECTIVE CLOTHINGS Most of the artist do not put on any protective clothes which makes sensitive part of their bodies easily prone to injuries. These craftsmen should therefore get some protective clothing like hand gloves, nose masks, goggle, safety boots, helmet etc. when working. This will shield them against injuries.
SUMMARY “ If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over? ” – john Wooden The hardest part of craftsmanship is being vulnerable. Pouring your soul into your work is like opening your heart to be broken multiple times over. Recognizing they will spend their lifetime building, true Artisans are not in a hurry to move on, they are willing to open themselves up against the struggle of failure until finally they get it right. Also, building a masterpiece requires incredible patience. It requires you to patronize QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.
