Present tense You will use this tense to describe what: is happening happens (on a regular basis) does happen (if you wish to stress the action) In other words there are 3 ways of expressing this tense in English. In French there is only 1 way: e. g. she sings } she is singing* } elle chante she does sing } *Note here that you must not translate is e. g. elle est chante
Regular Verbs • There are 3 groups: er/ir/re verbs. They are grouped in these categories because they end in er/ir/re. ER verbs are by far the most numerous. • ER Verbs • To conjugate (to use an er verb in all its forms i. e. je, tu, il etc. ) an er verb you must: • (a) take away (er) to obtain the stem • e. g. chanter chant • (b) add endings on to the stem: e/es/e/ons/ez/ent
Present tense of an er verb Je chante – I sing/I am singing/I do sing Tu chantes – you sing/ you are singing/you do sing Il/elle chante – he/she sings; he/she is singing; Nous chantons – we sing/we are singing/we do sing Vous chantez – you sing/you are singing/you do sing Ils/elles chantent – they sing/they are singing/they do sing

Reflexive Verbs • They follow the same pattern as er, ir, re verbs but they take a reflexive pronoun before the verb • Je me lave: I wash/I am washing/I do wash • Tu te laves You wash/you are washing/you do wash • Il/elle se lave: he/she washes; he/she is washing; he/she does wash • Nous nous lavons we wash/we are washing/we do wash • Vous vous lavez you wash/you are washing/you do wash • Ils/elles se lavent they wash/they are washing/they do wash

Negative Form (present tense) • Place ne before verb and pas after it. • e. g. je ne chante pas – I do not sing/I am not singing • e. g. il ne finit pas – he does not finish • e. g. je ne me lave pas – I do not wash • e. g. nous ne nous lavons pas – we do not wash
