Present tense of -ar, -er and -ir verbs

• Every verb has a stem followed by an ending. The stem tells the verb’s meaning. An infinitive ending does not have a subject. habl -ar com -er Infinitive endings Verb stems escrib -ir

• In English, most verbs have only two forms in the present tense, so subject pronouns cannot be left out. I sing you sing he/she sings we sing you sing they sing • In Spanish, the verb ending tells you who the subject is……….

3 Types of Verbs • There are 3 types of verbs: 1. Infinitives that end in -ar 2. Infinitives that end in -er 3. Infinitives that end in -ir

1. Some -ar Verbs • hablar cantar bailar escuchar

HABLAR Yo hablo Tú hablas Vosotros habláis Ud. Él Ella habla Nosotros hablamos Uds. Ellos Ellas hablan

2. Some -er Verbs • Some -er verbs that you already know are: beber leer comer ver

The pattern for -er verbs is much like the pattern for -ar verbs. The only difference is, instead of using “a” you use “e. ”

COMER Yo como Tú comes Vosotros Ud. Él Ella come Nosotros Uds. Ellos Ellas comemos coméis comen
