Assembly of high-Z capsule prototype III Ø Thin capsule of 2. 21 width led

Assembly of high-Z capsule prototype III Ø Thin capsule of 2. 21 width led to 2 mm of deformation with the present design Ø We attribute the deformation of the piece after E-beam welding to four main factors. They are summarized here with corrective actions taken: 1. The gap between the pieces was too large and by welding "it pulls" too much on the pieces. • Solution: We reduced the gap to a tolerance H 6 g 6 to the diameter. This represent a gap between 10 to 48 microns to the diameter 65. 2. The e-beam welding thickness was important • Solution: The reduction of the gap in 1 allows a reduction in the e-beam welding thickness. We will weld on 0. 3 mm thickness (instead of values > 0. 5 before). This should reduce the "pulling and deformation" on the pieces. 3. The e-beam welding pulled on piece and deformed it • Solution: We machined grooves next to the welding in order to create a lip that will deform at the place of the piece. The lips are 0. 5 mm wide and 1. 2 mm deep. 4. The process of stress relief annealing was omitted. • Solution: Pieces are stress relief is realized before the final machining. Ø Additionally: in parallel production of “two windows” version as plan B E. Fornasiere Present status of CERN capsules CERN BLIP Project, Geneva (Switzerland), 29 th November 2016 29. 11. 2016
