Present Simple - Where do you live? - I live in London. - What does he do? - He’s a doctor. => for something that is permanent (e. g. a job, the place where you live)
- Do you smoke? No, I don’t. - I never/hardly ever/ rarely/ sometimes/ often/ usually/ always have breakfast before I start working. => for habits (= actions that happen again and again) => we often use ‘adverbs of frequency’ with the Present Simple
- The world is round. => for general truths (= facts that are always true) - The train leaves at 7. 30 on platform 3. => for timetables - Do you understand what I mean? - I love you so much! => with state verbs e. g. know, understand, love, like, hate…
Present Continuous - What are you doing now? I’m cleaning the kitchen. - What are you studying this year? Arabic. => for something you’re doing at the moment (not permanent), but not necessarily happening at the moment of speaking - It’s raining/freezing/snowing… => for duration (e. g. weather)
- Why are you always calling me? => for repetition and irritation - I’m seeing the dentist at 6 p. m. - We’re having a party next Saturday. => for arrangements in the future (everything is fixed, e. g. an appointment)
- Peter is a student, but he’s working as a waiter during the holidays. => only with action verbs e. g. work, walk, play, cook, … ( state verbs)
