PRESENT CONTINUOUS FOR FUTURE 8 A/B 23 rd March 2020
“Be” + going to + infinitive • As you already know you can talk about your plans in English using the verb “be” + going to + infinitive. Examples: -I’m not going to watch TV tonight. -We’re going to travel to India in the summer. -What are you going to do tomorrow? (You can go through page 68 in your workbook to revise this again. )
“Be” + going to + infinitive • Remember! When “be going to” is followed by the verb “go”, it is possible to omit “go”. Examples: – Martin is going to (go to) the cinema this weekend. – They’re going to (go to) New York soon.
“Be” + going to + infinitive • This structure is also used to make predictions usually based on the situation now. Examples: – Look at the sky! It’s going to rain. • Now, open your notebook and write the title Present Continuous for future. Please read, write down and think about its usage in the future.
Present continuous for future • You can use the present continuous to talk about your plans and arrangements. To avoid confusion, use a time expression such as “tomorrow”, “this evening”, “next week”, “after class”, etc. Examples: -I’m visiting my grandma this afternoon. -We aren’t playing tennis this weekend. -What are you doing tomorrow?
• So, we use it for a fixed arrangement in near future, not only for an action happening now. We can also use it with the following structures. • “Be” + planning to + infinitive – I’m planning to buy a new car. – Are you planning to go on holiday? • “Be” + thinking of + gerund – She’s thinking of getting married. -Are you thinking of travelling soon?
