Finances When retiring be sure to take a closer look at your finances and spending. Know your numbers- speak to a representative with your pension system NYCERS or BERS to obtain pension estimate. This will help determine if the time is right to retire. Knowledge is power!!!!

Outstanding Loans If you have an outstanding NYCERS/BERS loan- it’s an important to explore ways to pay off the loan while you are working. Failure to pay your loan prior to retirement will result in decrease in your pension.

Budgeting 101 Know your income and expenses- this give the most accurate information. Write out all your expenses- for example: rent, mortgage, utilities, car payment, phones, eating out, movies, and lotto etc. . - This will give you a visual your spending verses your income. Be realistic-Aim to sticking to your budget.

WHAT ARE YOUR LEGAL SERVICES BENEFITS? • Free legal representation in covered legal matters • Absolutely no attorney fees • After paying a $150 deductible, $500 available for your litigation expenses • For RETIREES only, there is a reimbursement schedule for paid attorney fees incurred when you live outside of our covered area.

EXTENDED BENEFIT FOR RETIREES • If a retired member resides outside of the covered New York State Counties and has a covered legal matter, the retiree may be eligible for reimbursement of some paid attorney’s fees pursuant to a schedule approved by the Welfare Fund trustees

COVERED LEGAL MATTERS • Family Law: custody, visitation, orders of protections, child protective services proceedings, and private adoptions and some child support matters • Matrimonial Actions • Housing Court Tenant representation in non-payment and holdover proceedings • Civil Court Consumer actions and name changes • Foreclosure Actions • Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Filings • Real Estate: purchase, sale and refinance of coop, condo, one or two family homes • Wills, Powers of Attorney and Health Care Proxies

COVERED GEOGRAPHICAL AREAS • Your Legal Services Plan will represent you in the described cases in the following New York State counties: • New York, Kings, Queens, Richmond and Bronx Counties in NYC • Suffolk and Nassau County Long Island • Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam Counties in upstate New York

LITIGATION BENEFIT When you have litigation expenses on a case in which we represent you, after paying your $150 deductible, you will have $500 available to you to cover various court-related fees.

ABOUT YOUR LEGAL SERVICES PLAN • The Legal Services Plan currently has twelve full-time attorneys working to handle members’ and retirees’ cases and answer their questions. The best way to have the Legal Services Plan assist a member with his or her legal problem is to have the member call (212)924 -1220 and schedule an appointment. If the member does not need an actual appointment, the Plan has an advice hotline where staff attorneys will try to assist the member over the telephone.
