What is a prepositional phrase? • A phrase is a group of words behaving like one part of speech. • A preposition is a part of speech used to show the relationship between certain words in a sentence. • A prepositional phrase is a group of words including a preposition, an object of the preposition, and any words that modify that object. • Prepositional phrases always begin with a preposition and end with the object of the preposition (which is always a noun). • All the words in a prepositional phrase work together to act as one part of speech (either an adverb or an adjective)

Types of Prepositional Phrases • To figure out the type of prepositional phrase, look to see what the phrase is modifying (aka describing). • Adverbial prepositional phrases give more information on a verb in the sentence: • In front of the gate, the beggar demanded alms. • In this sentence “in front of the gate” is telling where the beggar demanded. • Adjectival prepositional phrases give more information on a noun in the sentence: • The beggar in front of the gate demanded alms. • In this sentence “in front of the gate” is telling where the beggar is.
