WHAT IS A CAREER FAIR? • Opportunity for employers and students to meet and exchange information • Employers: nature of business, available positions • Students: interests, qualifications • “Open house-style” event • Students come and go during hours of fair
When/where is the fair? Thursday, September 24 th, 2015 4: 30 pm to 7: 45 pm Union South, 2 nd Floor, Varsity Hall
Who can attend? • Any University of Wisconsin-Madison student! • Focused on Actuarial Science/RMI majors and students interested in related careers • Students of all years • Freshmen included!
How do I dress? BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR GUYS? • Dark business suit • Conservative dress shirt • Tie • Dress shoes (shine them if you can)
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR GIRLS? • Dark skirt/pant suit • Knee length fitted but not tight skirts • Conservative dress blouse • Hosiery • Pumps or Flats (closed-toe, heel)-whatever makes you comfortable
What not to wear • Casual clothing/footwear • Ex: Jeans, T-shirts, Polo's, tight dresses, revealing shirts • Strong fragrances • Excessive jewelry/makeup
What should I bring? • 15 -20 resumes • Base on the number of companies you’ll speak to • Padfolio, pens • Company research • WSB Nametag • Student ID! You do NOT need: • Transcripts • References • Cover letters
Resume Do’s & DONT’S Do… • Keep it to one page (no exceptions) • Use a clean, well-organized layout • Correct any spelling/grammar errors • Ensure all info is 100% factual; never lie, distort, or exaggerate!
Resume Do’s & DONT’S Don’t… • List duties without accomplishments/results • Include a work phone number • Use a functional format to hide gaps in work experience • Give a wrinkled or stained resume to a recruiter

Sample elevator speech Hi, I’m Bucky Badger! [Employer introduces him/herself] I’m a sophomore, majoring in actuarial science. I’m very interested in your summer internship opportunities. Last summer, I worked as a tour guide here on campus. I am currently an active member of the Actuarial Club (and play on the club’s intramural volleyball team). I noticed you have a few openings in your health practice this year. Could you tell me more about day-to-day work in the health group? *Don’t memorize; be conversational!*
What Questions to Ask • Do: • Use questions to demonstrate research • Ask about new articles, things on website, etc. • Show interest in their personal experience • Ask if they went through internship, their entry level responsibilities • Don’t • Ask for a job • Ask obvious questions that can be found easily on their website
During the fair • Upon meeting a company representative: • Greet the representative with a smile and firm handshake • Make eye contact • Deliver elevator speech • How much time should I spend speaking with an employer? • Be respectful of representatives’/other students’ time • 2 -3 people in line? ~2 -5 minutes • 4+ people in line? ~30 seconds-5 minutes
During the fair • Upon leaving a company representative: • Thank the representative for his/her time with a smile and firm handshake • Ask for a business card • Ask about the best means of following-up • Leave a resume • Take notes on your conversation
During the fair • General • • Be professional Be enthusiastic Be engaged (ask questions!) Prepare to speak with companies who are not on your list • Share your qualifications with employers (transferable skills? ) • Wear your nametag on the right side of your shirt • Visit a “warm up” company or two to get ready
After the fair • Write thank you notes/e-mails • Thank representatives for their time • Restate interest in company, available positions, and interviews • Mention something unique about conversation • Briefly describe qualifications (anything you failed to mention at the fair? ) • Connect with representatives on Linked.
