What is action research? • It is a process where teachers can examine their practice systematically and carefully using the techniques of research Click on the black area To watch the video * To watch videos you need MP 4 video 12/21/2021 2
The purpose of action research • Helps teachers improve their instructional practices by reflecting deeply on their work. • Offers the possibility of long-term changes generated by teachers themselves. • Helps teachers identify problems and seek solutions systematically. 12/21/2021 3
Why is action research? If change is to occur in schools that benefit students, teachers must look thoughtfully and critically at their own practices. And If teachers want to examine both purpose and process of their teaching, the answer is n o i t Ac Click on the black area To watch the video h c r a Rese 12/21/2021 4
The process of action research Developing a question Plan for future action Data analysis Plan of action research Data collection 12/21/2021 5
Developing a question Developing the question begins with identifying a problem that forms the basis for the research. You have to determine and describe the current situation. As educators we can answer the question stems… • “I would like to improve………………” • “I’m really serious about ………………” • “I want to learn more about……………” • “An idea I would like to try out in my class is…. ” • “Something I think would really make a difference is…” 12/21/2021 6
Plan of Action…… and Data Collection • Teachers should figure out how to put together a data collection plan. They should decide what kind of data will help them answer their questions. Then they begin mapping a plan. * They may begin by asking : * What data do I currently have about my students? * What feedback do I have from parents and others that will influence my thinking? * Where are the gaps with my students? • What do I want to record now to be sure that I don’t forget 7 later? * What sources of data shall I think of ? 12/21/2021
* Data can be qualitative or quantitative. In Action research teachers often rely heavily on qualitative data because what they are learning is rich and can be contextualized to their particular classroom. * Teachers use numerous techniques for gathering Action Research Data : * Interviews * Checklists * Portfolios * Field notes and observation records. * Questionnaires * Student-Teacher discussion and interaction * Documentary evidence 12/21/2021 8
* As action researchers proceed with collecting data , they should not narrow their focus too early. By continuing to explore , ask questions and consider new research , their inquiry will deepen significantly. • Any kind of data researchers collect will actually help them learn something. Data Analysis and plan for Future Action • With data analysis, “teachers reflect on their action research and begin to make plans for future actions”. * The process of analyzing data begins with going through everything, making notes as they go , looking for themes and patterns. • As they look for these themes , teachers may pick out some important themes that they want to take away with their action research. And then this is where the creative part comes in. • Teachers are encouraged to write continuously as they 10 study their data. 12/21/2021
* As teachers conclude the process of data analysis, they should write up and support the major points , and draw conclusions based on the evidence presented. * Ultimately, the analysis of data should lead to action. • Action research is an ongoing cyclical process wherein analysis of data continuously leads to new questions , actions and data.
