PREPARATION OF SESSION PLAN Presented by Mr Devi
PREPARATION OF SESSION PLAN Presented by Mr. Devi Dutta Bhatta Nepal Admnistrative Staff College July, 2015
FORE THOUGHT
LEARNING OBJECTIVE At the end of the session the participants will be able to ü State the concept and importance of session planning ü Explain the process of session planning ü Design the session plan as per the norms.
SESSION OUTLINE üIntroduction of session plan üComponents of session plan üPurpose of session plan üDeveloping üTips a session plan for preparing the better session plan üExamples
WHAT IS OUR UNDERSTANDING ABOUT SESSION PLAN?
WHAT IS SESSION PLAN? üA set of notes in logical order üA systematic structure of teaching/ learning activities üA checklist of the resources required conducting a session. üA kind of map guiding the total process of a trainers activities. ü A training Manual for trainer.
WHAT SESSION PLAN SERVES AS? During Session development: Before conducting the session: During the session: After the session: Planning tool Guide Roadmap Document
Entering a classroom without planning is like heading cross country without a map.
SESSION PLANNING
PURPOSE OF SESSION PLANNING üStructure the session üPrevents from deviation and save time üOrganize its contents/materials üDetermine method of its delivery üClarifies roles of trainers and learners üEvaluate its application/effectiveness üActs as resource checklist
WHAT POOR PLANNING RESULTS? üFrustration üAimless üUnmet üNo for the both trainer and participants wandering objectives connections to prior learning üDisorganization üLack üA of needed materials waste of time üPoor management
SESSION PLAN PHASES 1. Pre-assessement 2. Objectives setting 3. Plan the Methodology 4. List of materials 5. Time each activity 6. Evaluation 7. Closure and reflection
LETS BEGIN……. . The format of a session should… Go one step at a time Have a picture for every step Have a minimal reliance on words An effective session plan is a set of plans for building something – it “constructs” the learning.
The greater the structure of a sesssion and the more precise the directions on what is to be accomplished, the higher the achievement rate. Harry Wong, The First Days of Teaching
1. PREASSESMENT i. What are the characteristics of learners in terms of level, experience, and expectations ? ii. What do the participants already know and understand? iii. How do my participants learn best? iv. What modifications in instructions might I need to make?
2. OBJECTIVES SETTING ………. . are the learning outcomes of a lesson i. e. what the trainees should be able to know or do at the end of the session that they could not do at the beginning. Objective should have the impact on either or all of Head- cognitive ( Knowledge) Heart- Affective ( attitude ) Hand- Psychomotor ( skills
OBJECTIVE SETTING CONTD…. üUse of action/behavioral verbs Learning level Objectives 1. Remember(recall, memory) • State, list, describe, recognise, identify 2. Knowlegde(understanding) • Explain , interpret, select, discriminate, link 3. Application(able to put new • Demonstrate learning into practice) • Analyse • Conduct • Perform/write 4. Invention(add new learning, usulally needs on attitude change) • Invent • Create • Adapt • Design • modify
3. PLAN THE LEARNING METHODS The choice of method is based on the following üSession objective üContent üLevels üLocation üResources üAbility of facilitator No. of methodologies are available like üLecture discussion, Games, Brainstorm, Role play, case study, syndicate method etc….
4. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENTS üPlan! Prepare! Have on hand! (Murphy’s Law) üEnvision üList your needs. all resources. üHave enough manipulative (when needed) for groups or individuals
5. TIME EACH ACTIVITY üAllocate time for each major (group of) activity depending on their weight in contents and learning objectives üAllow adequate time for participation and discussion according to the nature of facilitation
6. EVALUATION Evaluation is important to know üHow far the objectives set have been met? üDeviations üFuture from the plan if any? modifications or improvements ? Kirkpatrick’s four levels model Reaction Learning Behavioral Outcome
7. CLOSURE üThis gives participants the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned, which is important for retention. üSummarize what has been learned. Relate it to previous learning. üTell them what they will learn next.
8. SELF-REFLECTION üWhat went well in the lesson? üWhat problems did I experience? üAre there things I could have done differently? üHow can I build on this session to make future lessons successful?
Session plan is the answers for 5 Ws and 1 H question. Who? Participants What? topic Why? session objective When? Time Where-? How? Location Delivery methods and
TIPS FOR PREPARING AND IMPLEMENTING SESSION PLAN üCheck whether each learning step leads learning objectives. üEffective time management is necessary while taking session. All the steps of the session plan must be completed within given time üCheck before the session that equipment and other training aids are rightly placed and are in order üIf there is hesitation on conducting session, rehearse the session plan once or twice in a closed room.
CONTD………. . üPrepare audio- visual aids for main points, which can be highlighted during the session. üModify the session plan, if necessary once implemented or on the basis of feedback from the learners or professional üKeep üTry the session plan for the future use. to develop the session plan on one page of a paper.
DESIGNING A SESSION PLAN AN EXAMPLE Date: 2072/4/15 Topic: Session Plan Time: 90 minutes Target participants: Officers of Go. N Venue: NASC Aim: To enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills on designing the session plan. Objective: At the end of the session participants will be able to üExplain the importance of session plan üDescribe üDesign the process of session plan the session plan independently
Time Activity Methodology Aids 5 min Climate setting Brainstorming, Meta cards, Discussion audio-visual 10 min Introduction, p Interactive urpose, elemen lectures ts Power point 20 min Designing the session plan Interactive lectures, group discussion Power point, 40 min Exercise on session plan Group discussion Flips charts 15 min Evaluation and wrap up Lectures, discu Power point ssion
EXERCISE üSelect a topic of your own choice. üPrepare a session plan following the format üAssume that the time allotted for your session is 40 min
FINAL THOUGHT Every teacher teaches three lessons: 1. 2. 3. The one we plan to teach The one we actually teach, and The one we wish we had taught
