Prešov History of our town
Birth of town � The first reference about Prešov was in the document of Belo IV. in 1247. � Prešov recieved its seignories 28 th January 1299 from Ugrian king Ondrej III. � Original documents weren’t preserved. The copy of document is saved in National District Office in Prešov. � Prešov rised on the cost of river Torysa.
Symbols of Prešov � City coat of arms - it includes 3 red roses and silver and red stripes � City flag – it is striped with silver and red color with snip from the lower side. � Small signum is smaller (36/22 mm) than big signum (45 mm). This signum is using by mayor when some big event is happening. Small signum can be used by municipal authority too.
Three coats of arms of Prešov � � � Prešov has had three coats of arms during the ages The first coat of arms had 3 red roses in the white field, and two silver(white) and two red stripes. Only verbal description has been remained and the miniature has bad quality. The second coat of arms was advanced version of first coat of arms. The basic was similiar but in left corner there was displayed black eagle holding a strawberry with two green and three red fruit in his claws. It was used only 10 years. The third coat of arms was completely new. In first and fourth blue fields is golden(yellow) lion hinging on the column and in the third and second silver(white) field is eagle from the second coats of arms. Nowdays The first coat of arms is used.
Prešov’s slaughters � � � Or Prešov’s Bloody court was special judge that foung guilty 24 townsmen and thanes from Prešov and neighborhood. All of them were charged of participation in preparing new conspirancy. During the investigation, they were tortured and then suffered sorely. The rebels were obviated by general count Antonio Caraffa who arrived from Naples in 1687 and had closed the gates of town immediately not to escape somebody. He set specific tribunal against the rebels to judge them and he was the chairman. The first judgements were sentenced 5 th March 1687. On the giant wooden scaffold 30 executioners were prepared with swords. Fires and plague � The town was also affected by natural disasters � 1886 -1887 high destructive fires affected Prešov � 1696 and 1710 there was big plague and the most of citizens died. In 1751 was built plague column in memory of victims.
Duct � Although Prešov had many mineral fountains, since it has uprised, citizens had big problems with fresh water. � They were pumping water from rivers and spruitsaround but in 19. century there were so many people in Prešov, that fresh water became really great problem. � In 1939 and 1940 situation was critical as there have been epidemic of ship fever. Engineers started to discuss and the consequence was town sduct which is now woking over 50 years.
