Prescription Filing Systems • Three-file system – Schedule IIs separately – Schedule III–Vs in a second file – Noncontrolled drugs in third file • Two-file system – Schedule IIs in one file – Scheduled III–Vs in second file – Alternative two-file system: place all Schedules II–V in one file and all noncontrolled drugs in another
Prescription Filling Concerns • Regulations for schedule drugs – Schedule II—no refill – Schedule III–V—max refill 5 times in 6 months • Auxiliary labels – Take with food – May cause drowsiness • OBRA 98—offer to counsel • Expiration dates— 12/07 expires 12/31/07 • Read label three times
DEA Number Verification • Add first, third, and fifth digits • Add second, fourth, and sixth digits & multiply by 2 • Add the above two results together • The last digit of the resulting sum should be the same as the last number in the DEA number • The second letter of the DEA should be the first letter of the prescriber’s last name • If the number does not pass these checks, notify pharmacist
