PREGNANCY THE NOURISHING PHASE
PREGNANCY
BIOLOGY OF BELIEF. . . Frontier science is confirming what mothers and enlightened fathers have known forever, that parents DO matter, despite best-selling books that try to convince them otherwise. To quote Dr Thomas Verny, a pioneer in the field of prenatal and perinatal psychiatry: “Findings in the peer reviewed literature over the course of decades establish, BEYOND ANY DOUBT, that parents have overwhelming influence on the mental and physical attributes of the children they raise. ” (Verny and Kelly 1981). . .
Research reveals that parents act as genetic engineers for their children in the months BEFORE CONCEPTION. In the final stages of egg and sperm maturation, a process called GENOMIC IMPRINTING adjusts the activity of specific groups of genes that will shape the character of the child yet to be conceived. (Surani 2001; Reik and Walter 2001)
These complex, small creatures have a pre-birth life in the womb that profoundly influences their long term health and behaviour. “The quality of life in the womb, our temporary home before we were born, programmes our susceptibility to coronary artery disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and a multitude of other conditions in later life, ” writes Dr Peter W. Nathanielsz in: LIFE IN THE WOMB: THE ORIGIN OF HEALTH & DISEASE. . .
Biology of Belief continued. . . Another pioneer in pre and perinatal psychology, David Chamberlain, writes in his book The Mind of Your Newborn Baby ‘The truth is, much of what we have traditionally believed about babies is false. They are not simple beings, but complex and ageless – small creatures with unexpectedly LARGE thoughts’. . . (1998)
. . . and that influence starts, says Verny, not after children are born, but BEFORE children are born. When Verny first posited the notion that the influence of parents extends even to the womb in his landmark, 1981 book, THE SECRET LIFE OF THE UNBORN CHILD, the scientific evidence was preliminary and the ‘experts’ sceptical. Because scientists used to think that the human brain did not become functional until after birth, it was assumed that foetuses and infants had no memory and felt no pain…

Erasmus Darwin published this in 1801!!! “Another thing very injurious to the child, is the tying and cutting of the navel string too soon; which should always be left till the child has not only repeatedly breathed but till all pulsation in the cord ceases. As otherwise the child is much weaker than it ought to be, a portion of the blood being left in the placenta, which ought to have been in the child. ” www. belly. com. au/birth/cord-clamping-delaying-cordclamping/
LOTUS BIRTH
Lotus Birth is a call to pay attention to the natural physiological process. It's practice, through witnessing, restores faith in the natural order. Lotus Birth extends the birth time into the sacred days that follow and enables baby, mother and father and all family members to pause, reflect and engage in nature's conduct. Lotus birth is a call to return to the rhythms of nature, to witness the natural order and to the experience of not doing, just being. www. lotusbirth. net
Guidelines for a beautiful, easy and happy LOTUS birth experience. . . 1. Welcome your baby into the world. 2. Rest your baby on your skin whilst you wait for the placenta to be delivered. This may be straight away or a few hours later. 3. Once the placenta emerges, place in bowl of any description. (I used a disposable hospital sick bowl!) 4. The cord will pulsate for quite a few minutes after both your baby and placenta have birthed. At this point, the cord will be a deep colour, firm and warm. 5. The cord will change to being white, cold and limp. 6. AFTER it has become cold, white and limp, whenever you are ready (AND THERE IS NO RUSH. Our baby was born at 5. 30 am and we waited until late afternoon) gently wash the placenta in WARM water. Pat dry. 7. Sprinkle liberally with your PINK HIMALAYAN SALT.
8. Coat both sides with a handful of your MIXED HERBS and ESSENTIAL OILS. 9. Wrap in your sheets of MUSLIN. 10. Place in your drawstring BAG. This can easily sit next to your baby whilst sleeping or be on your wrist when holding baby. 11. Repeat steps 6 - 10 every 24 hours. 12. The cord will become drier and harder each day, until it naturally separates from your baby anytime between 3 - 7 days. 13. You may consider burying your placenta under a tree to celebrate your experience. 14. ENJOY every second!
LOTUS BIRTH HERBS • • • Chamomile Leaves Echinacea Flowers, Root & Leaves Lavender Essential Oil Lavender Flowers Marshmallow Root Rose Otto Essential Oil Rosemary Leaves Sage Leaves Witch Hazel Leaf Uva Ursi Yarrow Flowers.
This blend of herbs can also be used as a post natal bath tea to aid recovery for both mother & baby. To use, tie a small handful of the herb mix into a piece of muslin or other very thin cotton and place into the bath. This soothing bath tea prevents infection, relieves pain and bruising, reduces swelling and promotes healing. Safe for episiotomy stitches, perenium tears and after a caesarean.
BENEFITS OF A LOTUS BIRTH 1. Allows your baby to have the gentlest transition possible from its placenta and into the world on its own. Your baby and its placenta have been created from the same cells. They have lived together inside of you for all the time you have been pregnant. 2. Ensures the huge amount of blood left in the placenta and the cord enters your baby where it belongs. The stem cells in the cord blood are incredibly beneficial. 3. Supports your baby's immature liver and kidneys by eliminating waste back to the placenta, allowing for the removal of stress hormones created during the birth. 4. Acknowledges your baby's energetic body, the aura and chakras, recognised in Eastern philosophies. The Lotus Birth leaves the navel chakra undisturbed. 5. Helps YOU to enjoy those first few days of your baby's life without rushing around.
Placenta capsules have been reported by mothers to: • reduce post-birth bleeding • encourage a quick and healthy milk supply • balance hormones (peaks and drops) • improve the appearance of the skin/hair/nails • reduce stress levels • prevent the baby blues and post-partum depression • energy to cope with a busy day after little sleep

BREAST FEEDING AND WEANING.
COLOSTRUM The breast secrets Colostrum for the first few days after delivery, which is yellow in colour and thicker than milk. Although it is in small amount, but is enough for a normal baby and is exactly what a baby needs for the first few days. It contains more antibodies and more WBC than the Later milk. Also more ZINC. It gives the first immunization to protect the baby. It is rich in growth factor which stimulates a baby’s immature intestine to develop. The growth factors prepare the baby’s intestine to digest and absorb milk and to prevent the absorption of undigested protein. Colostrum is laxative and help the baby to pass meconium.
Alternatives to Breast Milk Wet nursing used to be the norm! Holle Organic/Nanny Care Goat Milk Nutrition Sheep’s milk Seed milks Milk MEN!!! https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Di. Xp_See_Bs ‘Nourishing Traditions’ by Sally Fallon has interesting recipes!!!
FEEDING & CONTACT • From the moment of conception, all the baby has known is their mother. • To be separated (for whatever reason) can create fear and stress for the baby. • Consider the effect of the strict ‘Nannie’ regime of just feeding and changing and then left to cry, with no contact in between!!! • CONTACT & LOVE is what baby needs, building confidence as they gradually transition. • FEED ON DEMAND. • Traditionally, babies are kept close to the mother during the day in a sling and sleeps next to the parents at night.
Feeding Bottles • In 2007 scientists were calling for a ban on chemicals used in plastic containers, baby feeding bottles and sports water bottles. The chemical is BISPHENOL A (known as BPA) • BPA mimics Oestrogen • Concerns around interference with organ development with the developing child • USE GLASS BOTTLES!!!
