Predicting Think Box I predict What you think
Predicting Think Box I predict ______(What you think will happen next in the story) I predict this because______(details from the text to prove)(push for at least 3 pieces of evidence) I think _____(a thought or personal opinion about a character or situation in the story) I think this because _____(details from the text to support your opinion) (push for 3 pieces of evidence)
Summarizing - SWBST • Somebody= A character in the story. Give the character name, and a descriptor (what makes them, them). • Wanted=What was their goal? What were they trying to achieve? • But=What stood in the way of getting what they wanted? • So=What was the end result of this situation? • Add an I think …. because…. (share your thoughts on the situation) • Madame Loisel, a spoiled woman, wanted to wear fancy jewels to the party, but she did not have any, so she borrowed from a rich friend. I think that Madame Loisel is never satisfied. I think this because she has been invited to a fancy party, she has bought a fancy dress, and she is still complaining about not having nice things.
Questioning • I wonder (Question about your reading). I wonder this because (Why you are asking the question). I think that (an original thought or opinion that answer the question). I think this because (justification/proof for your opinions based on text evidence and your prior knowledge). • I wonder why Major Morris is acting like the paw is a horrible, terrible thing, and yet he still doesn’t stop the White Family from taking it? I wonder this because usually when you are friends with someone you don’t want to do them harm and with what we know about the monkey’s paw it only does harm. I think Major Morris has to get rid of the paw no matter what and to someone he knows for him to rid of it. I think this because he doesn’t stop Herbert from getting it out of the fire and even though he’s telling the bad things it’s caused and that they shouldn’t want it , he gives it to them anyway.
Infer Think Box I can infer…. (what conclusion you can draw from the text). I can infer because…(details that led you to your conclusion). I think…. ( A thought or opinion you have about the text). I think because (details from the text to prove). I can infer that there is something strange about the narrator. I can infer this because he says that he is nervous and that he is crazy. He also mentions having a disease. I think that he is possibly mentally sick and that is what is making him nervous. I think that the disease is playing tricks with his mind. I think this because he isn't making sense. He says that he is sick, but then talks about being healthy and about his senses working well. The sickness must be confusing him.
Connection Think Box • I can connect (specific part of the story are you connecting to). I can connect to this because (explain your connection fully). This reminds me of (specific example). This is just like (bring it back to the situation in the book). I think (an original thought about the text). I think this because (details from the text to prove). • I can connect to Kendra calling Maya names. I can connect to this because of a story I have read. This reminds me of the story “The Tuesday of the Other June”. In this story a bully calls another girl Fish Eyes, Buffalo Brain and Turkey Nose just because they share the same name. This is just like Kendra calling Maya “Never New” because of her clothes. I think that someone should stick up for Maya. I think this because Maya is attempting to make friends and trying to ingnore them, but the insults are making her feel like an outsider.
Envisioning: Using your 5 senses • I can (sense you’ve chosen)(describe what you can taste, see, smell, hear, touch using vivid adjectives) I can (sense) this because(use text evidence and your prior knowledge, what you already know about the taste…. etc ). I think (an original thought/opinion about the situations- what you wrote) I think this because(reasoning why you have that thought or opinion). • (Taste Example) I can taste the warm squishy bun that is crispy around the edges as my teeth sink into it. I can taste the tangy mustard and the sour pickles which make my eyes and mouth pucker. I can taste this because at Burger King a Whopper is loaded with mustard and I always get extra pickles. They always serve it hot, so the bun is warm and is singed around the edges from the flame broiled oven. I think that the girl really enjoys eating cheeseburgers. I think this because she describes it in such detail it makes me think it is her favorite food.
Envisioning Continued…. . • (Hear Example) I hear the sound of my heart beating in my ears like a loud drum. I can hear this because sometimes when you are scared you can hear your heart beating in your ears. It’s almost as if there is a drum beating that no one else can hear but you. You can hear everyone else around you muffled, but the drum beats the loudest. I think I hate when this happens to me. I think this because I am usually the most scared I’ve ever been before. I am usually so scared that all other noise is blocked out of my head except the one thing I hear in my ears. • (Sight Example) I can see the mom covered in dirt, her clothes dirty and tattered, her hair a tangled, wild mess. Her eyes are wide and practically bulging out of their sockets. The mom looks crazed, her eyes devoid of any real human emotion. Tears are streaming down her face causing streaks in her dirt stained cheeks. I can see a pulley and a long, thick rope hoisted over a tree leading to the mom’s foot. The rope around her foot is cutting into her skin leaving a red, bloody mark behind. I can see this because I have seen movies, such as World War Z, where people change into zombies. Their faces and eyes don’t show any human emotion and are not like their human selves. I can also see this because I imagine the mom in a cage like a rapid dog where all the originality of her is gone and in place is a crazed, soul-less person. She is nothing like the loving mother she once was. I think Mary was very brave to watch her mother turn. I think this because I know if it were my mother I don’t think I would have had the strength and courage to watch her turn into a zombie.
1 st Period Long Write Checklist • Introduce the title of the book you are reading • Rewrite your think box from the weekly reading log. Make sure you have your “I think … I think this because…” • Add 2 personal connections and experiences(text to self, text to text, or text to world) (Book You Book) • Include a lesson that you think is being taught through the book. (Explain how that lesson is being taught) • Include how that lesson applies to your life or the world around you.
1 st Period Writing Long I predict that Boris will behave in solitary confinement. I predict this because he feels there is no hope for him, he is deathly afraid of small spaces, and the guard says he will now learn his lesson. . I think that Boris will learn his lesson. I think this because now the guard is angrier with him. He is in more trouble and has been moved to a place that is worse than his previous cell. Long Write: While reading the story “The Escape”, I predict that Boris will behave in solitary confinement. I predict this because he feels there is no hope for him, he is deathly afraid of small spaces, and the guard says he will now learn his lesson. I think that Boris will learn his lesson. I think this because now the guard is angrier with him. He is in more trouble and has been moved to a place that is worse than his previous cell. I can connect to Boris behaving in solitary after he’s already gotten in trouble with the guards. I can connect to this because of a movie I saw. This reminds me of the movie “Thor: The Dark World”. In this movie Loki is sent to a cell in prison for committing a crime. While in his cell he was well behaved even when there was chaos in the other cells. This is just like Boris being sent to solitary in prison and behaves while he is in there. I can also connect Boris behaving in solitary. I can connect to this because of a personal experience. This reminds me of the time when I was little and was sent to my room for misbehaving. While in my room I was to be quite and not play with my toys, otherwise I would receive a longer punishment. Ultimately, I behaved while on punishment. This is just like Boris behaving after he is first put into solitary. I think that the story is trying to teach us you should listen to authority figures and follow the rules when it’s in your best interest to do so. I think this because if Boris had followed the rules he had in jail and not tried to escape he wouldn’t be going to solitary confinement as punishment. Also he should behave in solitary and just accept his punishment because going into the tunnel caused him more problems. I think that this is applicable to today’s world because all actions have a consequence, if you argue with your teacher’s in school or your parent’s at home you get into more trouble that you would have originally been in.
