Announcements We are “finished” with The Great Gatsby. However, not really. Next week we will discuss elements of style in the novel in order to prepare you to write your style analysis essay over the book. I will give you the prompt next week so that you can begin the pre-writing process. We will move on to poetry after next week and will spend about 3 weeks on it. Then, we will read Julius Caesar. That will take us right up to the EOC test. After the EOC, we will start doing some serious digging into AP Style work to prepare you for next year.
The Great Gatsby – Chapter 7 What’s with all the heat imagery in chapter 7? What does Fitzgerald accomplish by its use? What indications are there at the end of the chapter that Tom and Daisy are going to stay together despite his affair and her love for Gatsby?
The Great Gatsby – Chapter 8 Why does Fitzgerald wait until chapter 8 to present a detailed account of the original love affair between Gatsby and Daisy? Why does Daisy’s wealth always remain in the foreground of Gatsby’s feelings and memories of her?
The Great Gatsby – Chapter 9 What is the significance of Mr. Gatz’s arrival? What is ironic about his admiration of the house? Nick claims “this has been a story of the west, after all. ” What does he mean by that? How does Nick characterize Tom and Daisy at the end of the novel? What has each of them “smashed” during the course of the novel?
The Great Gatsby – Chapters 7 -9 Exam This exam will take place over 2 days (next Wednesday & Thursday). You will need both class periods to complete it. Part 1 – Wednesday. There will be 50 multiple choice general knowledge questions. They will be worth 1 ½ points each. Part 2 – Thursday. You will write a short essay (1 ½ to 2 pages) over one of the four topics in your study guide for this test. Of those four, I will put two on your exam and you will pick one of them to write about. You will type it using your Chromebooks and Google Docs and will email it to me when you are finished. I’m giving you the possible topics now so that you have plenty of time to prepare to write about them. You should do notes/pre-writing on all of them so that next Thursday you can simply synthesize your notes into an essay. That should allow plenty of time to finish during the class period.
Homework No homework tonight.
