PRE DISPOSING FACTORS TO ABUSE
Aims & Objectives � Aim of this lesson is to gain knowledge in what pre-disposing factors to abuse are. � By the end of the lesson you should be able to: � Describe 4 family types � List 3 social factors that can lead to abuse � Name 3 pre-disposing factors that can lead a parent to abusing a child
FAMILY � 4 v Nuclear v Reconstituted v Extended v Lone Parent Family types
What is missing? � In any type of family there are certain factors that need to take place……. � Children should be. . � Fed � Clothed � Sheltered � Loved � Protected � Given opportunities
Without these factors �A child could become vulnerable to abuse. � There is no single cause of child abuse and each family has different values and ways of nurturing the care of a child. � But the absence of one or more of the fundamental factors may be a RISK factor to abuse/neglect.
Risk Factors � Some factors may increase a child’s vulnerability to abuse: � Illness � Disability � Social Isolation � Poverty � Substance misuse � Depression � Education/upbringing
All abusers are strangers… � Most abuse and neglect takes place within the home � Can you think of reasons why a parent/carer might abuse a child � In small groups list reason why abuse takes place.
� Parents abused themselves � Young parents/lack of education � Poverty � Poor housing � Unemployment/redundancy � Low self esteem � Substance misuse � Mental health � New relationship � Unwanted pregnancy
