The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan • In June of 1947 Secretary of State George Marshall introduced what would become known as The Marshall Plan
• Pumped more than $13 billion into selected war-torn European countries.
• Provided 17 European countries with food to reduce famine, fuel to heat houses, machinery, and money to jump-start economic growth.
Criticism of the Marshall Plan • Would it be better to spend the money to build military strength? • Does rebuilding western Europe just make it a more attractive target to the Soviet Union?
Effects of the Marshall Plan • The aid helped countries that desperately needed assistance. • Created prosperity in Western Europe and increased trade between Europe and the United states.
