Practice Possibilities potential strategies that support people to engage effectively, purposely, and authentically in diverse settings
Practice Possibilities • Practice possibilities are recommendations. • They serve to identify what someone (or some organization) might or should do in response to the problems considered analyzed by your research team. • These might be actions, choices, and decisions that 1) serve to develop intercultural competence, 2) remove barriers that have inhibited people’s abilities to engage effectively, purposely, and authentically in diverse settings, or 3) create spaces and opportunities for people to practice intercultural praxis.
Practice Possibilities Template • Step 1: Recommendation • Step 2: Explanation • How do you come to this recommendation? Literature? Interview? Provide quote or citation that explains it. • Step 3: Transformation • What will change if this recommendation is implemented? Your team should identify 3 practice possibilities
An Example RECOMMENDATION [Company] should provide on site childcare for free or less than 5% of the employees’ annual salary. EXPLANATION A lack of affordable child care options is a “barrier to labor force participation” particularly for women (Kimmel, 1998, p. 287). Research by Marler and Enz (1993) found that onsite provision of child care led to “improved productivity and morale…reduced absenteeism, tardiness, and turnover” (p. 61). In fact, [name of person interviewed] shared that the opening of the childcare site at [company] increased the retention of women in both entry level and management positions and they’ve seen a greater number of women promoted in the five years since the childcare center opened. TRANSFORMATION The provision of onsite childcare is a responsible and responsive decision for [company] that will serve to improve employee satisfaction and loyalty to the company while also supporting productivity by reducing absensces, lateness, and turnovers. We also believe that implementing this recommendation will particularly benefit women in [company] who have been underrepresented at all levels of the company, especially management.
