Practice of ALT: Integration of MATLAB Programming into the Module, Durability of Structures Wayne Y. Wang School of Computing, Science & Engineering

Aim of Project • Enhancement of computer application and the development of programming skills of civil engineering students. • Integration of design, analysis, computer programming and problem-solving skills with computer tools and techniques. • The mathematical modelling of the general mass transport process and its application in civil engineering, particularly in the topic of the Durability of Structures.

Background The major difference between the needs of current and past civil engineers relates to the techniques available for solving complex problems [1] 1. Engineering: Civil Engineering CRAFTY Curriculum Foundations Project Clemson University, May 4– 7, 2000

Project Tasks Design and development of a Web-based (Blackboard) selfpractice online tool to support student learning of MATLAB programming to model the problems in the context of structural durability. The tool contains three components: I. The fundamental MATLAB programming Tutorial, which includes: ppt presentation, text, You. Tube video and exercise; II. Solving partial differential equations using MATLAB: § Using MATLAB PDE tool. § Writing programming script, m-file. III. Conducting modelling for a typical problems related to the concern of structural durability.

Task I: The fundamental MATLAB programming Tutorial • ppt presentation and text Teach yourself MATLAB • Online documentation http: //www. math. siu. edu/matlab/tutorial 2. pdf http: //en. wikibooks. org/wiki/MATLAB_Programming

Task I: The fundamental MATLAB programming Tutorial • Online examples/demos http: //www. mathworks. co. uk/pro ducts/matlab/examples. html • Exercises Students use these exercise to test themselves

Task II: Solving partial differential equations using MATLAB § Using MATLAB PDE tool to solve parabolic PDE Documentation from MATLAB

Task II: Solving partial differential equations using MATLAB § Using MATLAB PDE tool to solve parabolic PDE Online support with examples/demos

Step by step graphical instruction to solve a parabolic problem PDE tool GUI Define physics Define physical parameters Define boundaries Define domain Solve & Results

Task II: Solving partial differential equations using MATLAB § Writing MATLAB programming script, m-file http: //www. mathworks. co. uk/help/toolbox/pde/ug/parabolic. html

Task III: Modelling three typical problems related to the concern of structural durability. The following three cases are the main concerns in the context of structural durability, and their fundamental physics follows the parabolic PDE. Students are required to model the three processes by conducting a research to identify the required parameter data. 1. Carbonation of concrete 2. Chloride transport in concrete 3. Moisture attach on concrete
