Example 1. Quote Explanation Essential question • “Don’t forget that you are in a concentration camp. In this place, it is every man for himself, and you cannot think of others. Not even your father. ” (110) • This quote explains how concentration camp prisoners were ‘dehumanized. ’ They were forced to give up their loyalty to family members in order to look after themselves. In the camps there was no such thing as “father” or “mother. ” All that mattered was survival. • How can I use language to create and maintain the world I want to live in? • Elie is attempting to describe the evils that camp prisoners endured.
