1. The Author 1. Jan. 19, 1809~Oct. 7, 1849/Born in Boston, Massachusetts as a son between an actor and actress. 2. Poe was adopted by uncle John Allan, but he never formally adopted him. 3. He quitted his university because of the lack of money. It came from his alcohol and gambling addiction.
1. The Author 4. He married Virginia Clemm, his 13 -year-old cousin. 5. Dark romanticism genre. 6. He affected the authors of detective novel. 7. In 1847, his wife, Virginia Clemm died by tubercular when she was 25. 8. In 1849, he died in Baltimore at age of 40, the cause of his death is unknown.
2. Back Ground -An American Renaissance(1830~1840) In the 1830 s and 1840 s, America wanted their people to go toward west, so some people went there. However, in the cities along the east coast, old ideals arose again. At the same time, there were lots of intellectuals in Boston and its neighboring town. They spread ideas and traveling lecturers carried culture and science even to countryside. The young intellectuals of Boston were dissatisfied with Puritanism which was the title of founding New England. They wanted to see the inner life.
2. Back Ground -Transcendentalism Philosophical movement that developed in the 1830 s and 1840 s in the New England region of the United States as a protest against the general state of culture and society, and in particular, the state of intellectualism at Harvard University and the doctrine of the Unitarian church taught at Harvard Divinity School. Among the transcendentalists' core beliefs was the inherent goodness of both man and nature. They had faith that man is at his best when truly "self-reliant" and independent. It is only from such real individuals that true community could be formed. The major figures in the movement were Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau.
3. Gothic Novel. Gothic novel was a literary genre belonging to Romanticism. (Invented by Horace Walpole, whose The. Castle of Otranto(1764) contained all of the elements that constitute the genre. . The term "gothic“ applied to a style of medieval architecture and art. . By the 18 th century, the term "gothic" became linked with an appreciation of extreme emotion, the thrill of fearfulness and the awe in the sublime. . The term "gothick" was seen by the 18 th century as a Gothic revival, a forerunner of the Romantic genres. Gothic revival architecture, which became popular in the 19 th century, was a reaction to the classical architecture seen in the Age of Reason(Neoclassic).
3. Gothic Novel. The ruins of gothic buildings gave rise to emotions by representing the decay and collapse of human creations. . Setting in a castle -Old castle, sometimes abandoned, sometimes occupied. - Unknown parts, such as secret doors or stairways. . An atmosphere of mystery and suspense -The novel has a threatening feeling of the unknown.
4. Summary It is beginning with the confession of a protagonist. He loved animals and was gentle by nature. He married an woman who had the same character as himself. One of their pets was a black cat which named ‘Pluto’. The master’s nature was changed because he had too much to drink. He tortured his animals, and hung Pluto by the neck. He had felt guilty a little bit, so He brought another black cat. It looked like Pluto. The only difference this one had “White Hair”. One day, He went down to the basement with his wife ; was about to be fell down because of the black cat. He tried to kill it. But he failed because of his wife. So, He was angrier than before, and killed his wife with an axe and hid her dead body inside the wall. After that the black cat was missing. He was almost brushed away with doubts. But the police heard a weird sound from the wall. They found the body with the black cat which was still sitting on the body’s head.
