AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXAM The Power and Conflict anthology appears on Paper 2 of the GCSE English Literature exams. PAPER 2 MODERN TEXTS AND POETRY 96 MARKS (60%) 2 HOURS 15 MINUTES - 45 MINUTES FOR EACH SECTION A [34 MARKS + 4 FOR SPAG] MODERN TEXTS There will be TWO questions for each text and you will choose ONE. You will respond in essay form to your chosen question. Assessed for AO 1, AO 2 and AO 3. SECTION B [30 MARKS] ANTHOLOGY POETRY There will be ONE question for the cluster you have studied. One poem from the cluster will be printed on the exam paper together with a list of all the poems in the cluster. You will be asked to COMPARE the poem printed with ONE other poem of your choice from the cluster. Assessed for AO 1, AO 2 and AO 3. SECTION C [32 MARKS] UNSEEN POETRY There will be TWO new poems for you to read in this section and TWO questions to answer. QUESTION 1 [24 marks] o You will write about the first poem only. o Assessed for AO 1 and AO 2. HOW TO WRITE ABOUT THE POETRY [SECTION B OF THE EXAM] PLANNING YOUR RESPONSE • Read the named poem carefully, even if you think you know it really well! • Think about themes and use the grid on the next page to help you find a COMPARISON • Write down the similarities/differences between the named poem and the one you’ve chosen This could be themes, writer’s method, contextual factors • Write down any key quotations that you will use in your essay (this will help to focus your attention in your writing!) • Find a planning strategy that works for you: mindmaps; bullet points; venn diagrams etc. WRITING YOUR RESPONSE • Write a short introduction – only a few sentences – to outline which poems you are comparing and why. • Use your PEA-EA-CE structure • Although it is tempting, don’t write two separate essays; you need to do a side-by-side analysis! • Write a quick conclusion – summarise the similarities/differences in their presentation of the named theme.
