Poverty in the UK • Poverty is not just a problem which happens in other countries, to other people Many people in the UK live in poverty and face many difficulties There are lots of TV programmes which attempt to make poverty look like the fault of the individual We are encouraged to blame and hate poor people, rather than ask what the reasons for poverty might be, and question a system which keeps some people very, very rich, and the majority of us poor
Individualists and Collectivists There are 2 views about what causes poverty in the UK, and whose responsibility it is to deal with it • Individualists think that we are to blame for problems ourselves Collectivists think that problems are to do with the way that society works – it is not the fault of the individual- the system is unfair and should be changed. A quarter of children in the UK live in poverty in the UK – that’s 3. 7 million children Read p 25/26 and answer the questions on page 26
