But alongside: • Parents will also be making lots of adjustments to their usual lifestyle. • There will be an impact on other close family members, such as siblings. The father or partner of the mother may also be the person closest to the mother. This means they are best placed to support her through the early days and weeks of motherhood, which can be difficult. It can take a great deal of time and energy to take care of the new baby. The mother needs to take care of herself too, in order to: • Stay fit • Stay healthy • In some cases, recover from the birth. This will be available to them from their; GP, midwife & health visitor. The role of the health visitor is to give all families support, from pregnancy until children are five. They also lead the Government’s Healthy Child Programme in partnership with other health and social care colleagues. This offers every family regular contact with a health professional. The work of health visitors is essential to this. It is important to the lifelong health and well-being of babies, children and families. Health visitors and midwives typically provide information, advice and support on a wide range of issues, including: • • • Feeding Sleeping Child development Safety Crying Equipment Interaction Care of a sick child/medical conditions Meeting a child’s individual needs. Postnatal Family Needs December 2021 Information, Advice and Support – Midwife Hospital midwives often work on postnatal wards, where they will be on hand to provide information, advice and support. Community midwives visit new mothers at home after the birth for up to ten days. They may also see them at a special clinic. They will offer information, advice and support in both environments. Independent midwives work privately outside of the NHS, usually with mothers having a home birth. Parents generally establish a very trusting relationship with the midwife/midwives involved in their: • Antenatal care • Labour • Postnatal care. Understand postnatal provision. They may be reluctant to say goodbye to their midwife when the time comes, but the health visitor will be there to fill the void, taking over many of the same duties – giving information, advice and support. Postnatal Family Needs December 2021 Information, Advice and Support – GP When a child is ill, the GP will usually be the first point of contact for information, advice and support. Crucially, they can also treat babies. To make sure that families get the treatment, information and advice they need to keep healthy, GPs work with others, including: • Health visitors • Those working in group settings such as children’s centres, pre-schools or nurseries • Childminders. The NHS website advises parents to try their local pharmacy first if their child is ill. The pharmacy should be able to tell them if the child needs to see a GP. If the child has signs of a serious illness, parents should contact the GP directly or take them straight to the A&E department of the local hospital. Most GP surgeries are supportive towards parents of small children. Many GPs provide telephone appointments and some will fit babies into surgeries without an appointment, or see them at the beginning of surgery hours. Understand postnatal provision.
