What is Postmodernism? Postmodernism is a complicated term, or set of ideas, one that has only emerged as an area of academic study since the mid-1980 s. Postmodernism is hard to define, because it is a concept that appears in a wide variety of disciplines or areas of study, including art, architecture, music, film, literature, sociology, communications, fashion, and technology.
When did Postmodernism begin? It's hard to locate it temporally or historically, because it's not clear exactly when postmodernism begins. Perhaps the easiest way to start thinking about postmodernism is by thinking about modernism, the movement from which postmodernism seems to grow or emerge.
The most important features are: n n n n n Destructured, decentered and dehumanized subject fragmentation and discontinuity reflexivity and self-consciousness rejecting boundaries between high and low forms of art rejecting rigid genre distinctions parody irony playfulness ambiguity
The author The figure of the author loses its role, because there is no authority in postmodernism, therefore is not a stable perspective.
The language The use of language has become the use of languages, language is just a vehicle. What the narrator is talking sums up a lot of meanings.
The time of narration The time is fugitive and fragmented, a remote control disrupts the linear time Moreover the e motional aspect of people is very important in postmodernism because it changes the way to learn.
The Era of Postmodernity Today people live in Postmodernity. All kinds of languages, for example the languages of media, refer to the characteristics of Postmodernism: n Intratextual language n Using language you can change audience’s mind n Language = method of communication
