N produces a sharp decrease of thermal conductivity when heat flows in a direction perpendicular to the nanoplatelets. A smoother decline for the in-plane direction is observed, which is a reverse trend to that observed for different GNP/ceramic composites. The high directionality of heat conduction for the GNP/Al. N composites with 80 W/(m. K) for the in-plane direction and half this value for the cross plane can have interest for applications requiring fast heat release at specific directions as for example in thermal interface materials. Another important effect to consider is that for nanoplatelet contents ≥ 5 vol. %, these composites become electrically conductive and therefore could produce useful materials for applications -LEDs or MEMs- others than substrate packaging. As expected, composites are less hard than the bulk Al. N material, but the influence on other mechanical parameters such as toughness and strength remains to be investigated although based on results for other GNP-ceramic composites firm improvements should be expected.
