Some proper nouns can form the possessive by adding on an ’s or they can omit the s, simply adding on an apostrophe Examples: James’s brother; Charles’ wife 3. For plural nouns ending in a -s simply add on an apostrophe Examples: the members’ forum; the girls’ books

In the case of a compound noun or a title, the possessive is added on to the final word Examples: my brother-in-law’s computer; Elizabeth I’s popularity 5. You can form the possessive of countries, rivers and cities by adding on an ’s or using the + “of” Examples: Portugal’s beautiful beaches or the beautiful beaches of Portugal 6. In the case of two possessors each possessing a different object, you use an ’s for both possessors Examples: Lynne’s and Jonathan’s computer (Lynne has a computer and Jonathan has a computer) BUT Lynne and Jonathan’s computer (they both share the same computer)

With expressions of time such as: second, minute, hour, day, night, month, year we add an ’s to indicate possession Examples: today’s newspaper; without a second’s delay; in an hour’s time 8. To indicate possession with family names, put the family name in the plural form and add an apostrophe Examples: the Smiths’ house; the Monchamps’ car
