BRONFENBRENNER MODEL OF ECOLOGICAL THEORY OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
• People live their lives surrounded by many different environments at the same time. • People are affected by multiple layers of environment. • The environments are also linked and affect each other. • When one of five systems change, change may occur in other systems as well. • There are give basic environmental systems that affect development.
• 5 BASIC ENVIROMENTAL SYSTEMS • Microsystem --‐ The activities / interactions in the immediate environment --‐ The microsystem refers to relations between the child and the immediate environment, • Mesosystem --‐ Connections between microsystem. --‐ The interaction among two or more settings. • Exosystem --‐ An individual is not directly involved --‐ Contexts children are not a part of but may influence development • Macrosystem --‐ The larger socio--‐cultural context, cultural values and expectations • Chronosystem --‐ events occurring in the context of passing time.
• The development is the outcome of interactions between the Person and Many environments that continually emerge and Change over time. • To truly understand promote youth development, we must appreciate the entire context of their lives.
Positive youth development changes how we look at and provide youth services § Move from fixing problems to building on strengths § Instead of reacting to problems we are pro-active to build positive outcomes § Youth are no longer recipients of service and become resources and active participants
