What influences a person’s self esteem? : Puberty & development Media Images School environment self-esteem reflects a person's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth.
Define Body Image…. Body Image is the mental picture you have of your body. It includes attitudes and feelings about how you look & how you think other people see you.
Body Image Body image is how you view your physical self — including whether you feel you are attractive and whether others like your looks. For many people, especially people in their early teens, body image can be closely linked to self-esteem.

Statistics 50 -88% of adolescent girls feel negatively about their body shape or size. 1, 2 49% of teenage girls say they know someone with an eating disorder. Only 33% of girls say they are at the “right weight for their body”, while 58% want to lose weight. Just 9% want to gain weight. • Females are much more likely than males to think their current size is too large (66% vs. 21%).
• Over one-third of males think their current size is too small, while only 10% of women consider their size too small. • Strikingly, while only 30% of older adolescents surveyed consider their current size acceptable to them, 85% of females and 95% of males considered their current size socially acceptable for others. • 85% of young women worry “a lot” about how they look and twice as many males as females say they are satisfied with their appearance

Our Lesson: Inflated Plastic Bag Figure Using plastic bags to represent a figure that embodies positivity, to represent theme of positive body & self image
Rationale Population: Adolescence Thinking about positive body image & focus on the positive aspects of their person. Teens are greatly affected by negative body image. Through this negative body image grows preconceived ideas and thoughts that are somewhat faulty and can in the long wrong create large problems such as eating disorder and low self-esteem. By creating a lesson plan that focuses on the positive messages and ideas link to your body may help the student think of their body in a positive matter and in the long wrong help them. Creating a sculptural kinetic art work. A collective art work the students will learn collaborative skills and will learn to communicate
Learning Objectives Learning objectives: Student will learn about different artist who create sculpture with plastic bags. They will learn how to use visual language to express them self. The students will learn to cooperate together and work together towards a common final art work. Student talk about positive throughout the art marking and will learn positive ways to talk about themselves. Art-making objectives: The students will be learning how to creating a kinetic sculpture using air and plastic bags. They will learn how to create an organic sculptural shape out of plastic bags. They will learn to use visual language to represent positive body image. Finally they will be working together to create a common art work.
Art appreciation objectives: The students will look at the sculpture talk about why they created the shape the way they did. They will have to let the sculpture float away in there air and talk about how the effemeral aspect of the art work is important. Social and community objectives: The students will be working together towards a common art work. The subject matter of body image is one that is important within teenagers and by creating such art work they will empower them selves and each other about the issue of negative body image.
Materials • Clear/white garbage bags • Sharpie markers (black permament marker or water base sharpie) • Rolls of clear packaging tape • Scissors • Sketching paper • Pencils • Blow-dryer • Computer
Step 1 • Each student will be given a bag. • Sharpie markers will be spread out on the table for all the students to share. • The students will first draw the shape of the body part they chose on the bag, they have to make sure that the bag is folded.
Step 2 • They will draw the pattern or image of their choice using the sharpie markers. • The students will cut out the shape.
Step 3 • Once the student are satisfied with their piece, they can tape the inside together
Step 4 • The students should keep two open space on their piece. • The 2 nd student being done will attach his piece to the 1 st student’s piece. The 3 rd student being done will attach his piece to the 2 nd student’s piece. • Every student will proceed this way until everyone is done.
