Positive and Negative Space Can you see how the negative space can be seen as a shape? By enlarging the positive white shapes, the negative space is more confined and defined. It now displays characteristics of form (rather than just space) and may be described as a shape. With its thick and thin portions, can you recognize the black area as an organic shape?

Notan: The Japanese design concept that stresses the equal importance of dark and light,

Notan: The Japanese design concept that stresses the equal importance of dark and light, or positive and negative shapes. “Seeing with Notan eyes” means being able to focus attention back and forth between positive and negative shapes. Notan provides two ways to view your layout. 1. Seeing strong positive shapes and 2. Seeing strong negative shapes.
