Your SUBJECT – Choose WHO you’d like to draw and we’ll superimpose a grid over top of the photograph.
Photograph You will need… Grid Drawing Paper
PREP… 1. Staple grid behind drawing paper 2. Mark ‘dots’ and/or label coordinates
How do I start? • By drawing the outline of the head first, following the grids, then filling in the lines, shapes and values that you observe OR • In the top corner and work section-to-section OR • With the eyes, because that’s what we often notice first, then work your way outward
Draw exactly what you see, re-creating the values (lights & darks).

Helpful Hints… üLabel the grid (A, B, C… across; 1, 2, 3 down) to help you find the correct position üMake faint dots on your drawing paper that show where grid lines intersect to help with accurate positioning üDraw LIGHTLY at first!!! Staple the grid BEHIND your drawing paper. (So you can see through to the guidelines. )
The DON’T Stuff… 1. 2. 3. 4. DON’T start shading right away! (hard to erase!) DON’T rush! (takes time and patience!) DON’T make things up! (Trust your eyes! Draw what you see!) DON’T get frustrated if you notice a mistake! (The GOOD news… You noticed it! Fix it, be proud and move on!)
