PORTABLE POWER AND MACHINE TOOL SAFETY TOOL HAZARDS
PORTABLE POWER AND MACHINE TOOL SAFETY
TOOL HAZARDS Loss of eye/vision using striking tools without eye protection. Puncture wounds using a screwdriver with a loose handle which causes the hand to slip.
TOOL HAZARDS Severed fingers, tendons and arteries using a dull knife requires so much force that your hand may slip down the blade. Broken bones using the wrong hammer for the job and smashing a finger.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Perform regular maintenance Use right tool for the job Inspect all tools before use Use the right personal protective equipment (PPE) Report to your supervisor / teacher any unsafe tool.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Do not use defective tools Use tied-off containers to keep tools from falling off of molds or work platforms. Keep all cutting tools sharp. Carry all sharp tools in a sheath or holster. Return tools to their storage places after use.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Floors should be kept as clean and dry as possible to prevent accidental slips with or around dangerous tools. The greatest hazards posed by tools result from misuse and improper maintenance. Employees have the responsibility for properly using and maintaining tools.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Do not perform "make-shift" repairs to tools. Do not carry tools in your hand when climbing, or by the cord. Do not throw tools from one location to another, from one employee to another, from scaffolds or other elevated platforms.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Do not remove or bypass guards Keep tools away from aisle areas and other employees working in close proximity. Watch your hands and fingers. Keep your mind on your work.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Grip tools firmly. Operate according to the manufacturer's instructions. Never carry a tool by the cord or hose. Never yank the cord or the hose to disconnect it from the receptacle.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Disconnect tools when not in use, before servicing, and when changing accessories such as blades, bits and cutters. Ground all tools unless double insulated. Avoid dangerous environments. Do not use power tools in a damp, wet and/or explosive atmosphere -fumes, dust or flammable materials.
BASIC SAFETY RULES All observers should be kept at a safe distance away from the work area. Secure work with clamps or a vise, freeing both hands to operate the tool. Ground all tools unless double insulated.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Do not hold a finger on the switch button while carrying a plugged-in tool. Be sure to keep good footing and maintain good balance. The proper apparel should be worn. Loose clothing, or jewelry can become caught in moving parts.
BASIC SAFETY RULES Don't use an accessory or attachment unless the power tool manufacturer recommends its use on the product Keep cords and hoses away from heat, oil, and sharp edges.
PORTABLE DRILL Check carefully for loose power cord connections and frays or damage to the cord. Be sure the chuck is tightly secured to the spindle. This is especially important on reversible type drills. Tighten the bit securely. The chuck key must be removed from the chuck before starting the drill.
PORTABLE DRILL Check handles. Be sure they are securely installed. Always use the auxiliary drill handle when provided. It gives you more control of the drill, especially if stalled conditions occur.
PORTABLE DRILL Always hold or brace the tool securely. Brace against stationary objects for maximum control. Don't force a drill. Apply enough pressure to keep the drill bit cutting smoothly. If the drill slows down, relieve the pressure.
PORTABLE JIGSAW Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect equipment. Ensure the work area is suitable for the use of jigsaw. Check that the tool is tagged and tested
PORTABLE JIGSAW Check the jigsaw and the power cord for signs of damage. Report any faults to the teacher. Keep the power cord and the hands clear of the jigsaw blade.
PORTABLE JIGSAW To avoid cutting yourself, make sure that you hold the jigsaw in the correct way as specified by the manufacturer. Jigsaw blades are prone to be broken if excessive forces are applied.
PORTABLE JIGSAW Use a safe working posture. When not in use, place the jigsaw away from the edge of the bench. Never operate the jigsaw in damp conditions or in the vicinity of flammable vapors.
PORTABLE JIGSAW Return the jigsaw to its storage place when you have finished using the tool. Metal and wood cutting require different cutting blades, make sure you use the correct type for the job.
PORTABLE JIGSAW There is a limit to the thickness of material that the jigsaw can handle, read carefully the user manual to avoid damage. Don’t overreach when cutting. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
PORTABLE JIGSAW Let the saw blade do the work. Manual pressure is not going to help the cutting action, and too much forward pressure will reduce the life of the blade and the quality of cut.
PORTABLE JIGSAW Always make sure the cable is out of the cutting region and wear a mask and safety goggles to prevent the fine dust entering the nose and eyes. Use dust extraction if required.
PORTABLE ORBITAL SANDER Always wear safety glasses with side shields or safety goggles. Keep the work area free of debris. Have the dust extracting system turned on and connected to the sander.
PORTABLE ORBITAL SANDER Because of the dust created when sanding wood, the fire and explosion hazard is considerable. Ensure that fire extinguishers are available and that persons working with the equipment know how to operate the extinguishers.
PORTABLE ORBITAL SANDER Make sure that the sanding belt tracks properly. On the disk sander, use only the side of the disk that travels downward. Whenever possible, use the table to support the work.
PORTABLE ORBITAL SANDER Check that the sander does not have a torn belt or ripped sandpaper disk. The work could get caught and kick back. Loose jewelry, neckties, and loose fitting clothing should not be worn. Tie back long hair.
PORTABLE ORBITAL SANDER Always make sure the cable is out of the cutting region and wear a mask and safety goggles to prevent the fine dust entering the nose and eyes. Use dust extraction if required.
PORTABLE ROUTER Remove jewelry and confine loose clothing. Wear safety glasses or a face shield. Select proper bit for work to be done. Always be sure the collet nut is securely tightened to prevent the router bit from slipping during use.
PORTABLE ROUTER Make certain that the work piece is rigidly held in desired position and free of obstructions. Always hold the router firmly and against the work, using both hands. Keep cutting pressure constant. Do not overload the router.
PORTABLE ROUTER Never adjust depth of cut while motor is running. A slip at this time may cause personal injury or damage to the cutter or work piece. Be sure cord is free and will not “hang up” during routing operations. Keep hands clear of cutter when motor is running to prevent personal injury.
PORTABLE ROUTER Be sure switch is “OFF” before plugging in. Maintain firm grip on router when starting motor to resist starting torque. Allow motor to come to full speed before contracting work piece. Stay alert and keep cutter clear of all foreign objects while motor is running.
PORTABLE ROUTER Be sure motor has completely stopped before setting machine down between operations. Make a trial cut on a piece of scrap lumber when changing adjustments
PORTABLE CIRCULAR SAW Remove jewelry and confine loose clothing. Always wear safety glasses or face shield. Be sure that you are familiar with the correct ope ration of the saw before attempting to use it. Set blade only 6 mm deeper than the thickness of the material.
PORTABLE CIRCULAR SAW Be sure the automatic guard is free and retractable. Keep a firm grip on the saw at all times. Get a comfortable and safe position for entire cut before starting. Keep electric cords in the clear to avoid cutting.
PORTABLE CIRCULAR SAW Always use sharp blade and proper blade for job being done. Check stock for nails, screws, etc. , before cutting it. Allow saw to gain maximum speed before starting the cut. Always unplug the saw when changing blades.
PORTABLE CIRCULAR SAW Keep hands away from cutting area. Never reach underneath the material for any reason. Keep blade sharp. Dull blades may cause the saw to swerve or stall under pressure. Hold the guard back with the lever.
PORTABLE CIRCULAR SAW Start the saw and gradually lower it until its base rests flat on the material. Never back up the sag while cutting. Lay the saw down properly on its side when you have finished.
RADIAL ARM SAW Remove jewelry and confine loose clothing. Always wear safety glasses or face shield. Be sure that you are familiar with the correct operation of the radial arm saw before attempting to use it.
RADIAL ARM SAW When you're ready to use your radial arm saw to make a cut, always wait for the saw to reach full speed before beginning the cut, and then turn off the saw after completing the cut. Do not move away from the saw until after the blade has reached a full and complete stop.
RADIAL ARM SAW When using a radial arm saw, always keep your work piece firmly on the table and against the rear fence. Never free-hand a cut on a radial arm saw. Also, if there any scrap pieces or sawdust that may impede your cut, always remove the obstruction before turning the saw on.
RADIAL ARM SAW Cross-cutting on a radial arm saw can be a bit tricky, because the saw blade rotates in the same direction as the cut. As such, the operator needs to pull the saw through the cut, but at the same time, keep the saw blade from grabbing and pulling the blade through the cut too quickly.
RADIAL ARM SAW To counter the saw's desire to pull through the wood quicker than necessary, the operator must pull at a slow, even pace while simultaneously not allowing the saw to push faster than desired. This becomes easier with practice.
BAND SAW Keep floor around machine clean. Secure loose clothing. Wear safety glasses or a face shield. Make all adjustments with power “OFF” Always keep doors covering wheels closed.
BAND SAW Adjust upper guide to about 1/8” above material being cut. Do not look around or carry on a conversation while operating machine. Give your work your undivided attention.
BAND SAW Only one person is to be in the operating zone. Turn off the saw before you back the blade out of a cut. Shut off the power and do not leave until the machine has come to a complete stop.
BELT/DISC SANDER Always wear eye protection. Remove jewelry and confine loose clothing. Make all adjustments with the power “OFF”. Hold work firmly when sanding .
BELT/DISC SANDER Always sand on downward side of disc. Do not sand pieces of material that are too small to be safely supported.
DRILL PRESS Remove jewelry and confine loose clothing. Wear safety glasses or a face shield. Make all adjustments with the power “OFF”. Adjust the table and drill to avoid drilling into the table.
DRILL PRESS Pull the key out of the chuck. Shut off the power and clean table before you leave the machine. Do not raise or lower table unless table lock is released.
SUMMARY Power tools are very common to any production facility. They can expose employees to multiple hazards if they are not maintained and used properly. It is critical that you know how to maintain, test and operate any power tool you intend to use.
