Overview Goals of Project n High-level Design n Demo n The History of Porta. View n What We Have Learned n
Goals of Project To construct a network-based photo album that one can use to distribute digital pictures around the house or office n To evaluate how users perceive this conceptual model n
High-Level Porta. View Design n Master Porta. View Kitchen Porta. View Mom’s Bedroom Porta. View n Living Room Porta. View n n Master Porta. View contains all pictures Central console to push pictures to different Porta. Views through a network Uses Java Swing and XML-RPC for networking Internally uses MVC extensively
Demo Connecting Porta. Views n Assigning an album to a local Porta. View n Assigning an album to a remote Porta. View n Changing the border width, color, and transparency n Changing the slideshow display interval n
The History of Porta. View n Paper Prototype (Oct. 1, 2003) ¨ Designing n First Iteration (Nov. 1, 2003) ¨ 50% n on cardboard and postit notes functional, initial Java implementation Second Iteration (Nov. 15, 2003) ¨ 90% functional, made improvements after first round of user evaluation n Third Iteration (Dec. 1, 2003) ¨ 100% functional, provides more feedback to users and make information more explicit on screen
Paper Prototype (Oct. 1, 2003)
First Iteration (Nov. 1, 2003)
Issues Discovered During User Testing Sometimes text labels do not convey the right information to the user n User hesitates to try out feature if there is no instant feedback n Some users did not immediately understand the distributed picture frame conceptual model n
Modifications Made to Improve User Experience Moved the sliders from the preview panel to a dialog box n Changed various text labels n Made information more visible (play speed, album information, etc) n Provided instant feedback to the user n
Second Iteration (Nov. 15, 2003)
Third Iteration (Dec. 1, 2003)
Find (at least) 6 Differences! Second Iteration Third Iteration
What We Have Learned n n n Paper prototype saves time Very important to give instant feedback User testing provides insight into non-obvious issues not previously discovered by designers Because of people’s varying backgrounds, it can be difficult create a system that maps to all users’ mental models MVC is complex to implement. However, it provides significant benefits
