POPULATION EXPLOSION

DEFINITION: Population Explosion refers the sudden and rapid rise in the size of population.

DEFINITION: Population Explosion refers the sudden and rapid rise in the size of population. A drastic growth in population beyond normal limits is called population explosion. It is more prominent in underdeveloped and developing countries. OR Human overpopulation (or population overshoot) occurs when the ecological footprint of a human population in a specific geographical location exceeds the carrying capacity of the place occupied by that group. The ecological footprint measures human demand on nature, [2][3] i. e. , the quantity of nature it takes to support people or an economy. The carrying capacity of a biological species in an environment is the maximum population size of the species that the environment can sustain indefinitely, given the food, habitat, water, and other necessities available in the environment.

History: The human population has gone through a number of periods of growth since the dawn of civilization in the Holocene period, around 10, 000 BCE. It is estimated that between 1– 5 million people, subsisting on hunting and foraging, inhabited the Earth, when human activity shifted away from hunter-gathering and towards very primitive farming Around 8000 BCE, at the dawn of agriculture, the population of the world was approximately 5 million. The next several millennia saw a steady increase in the population, with very rapid growth beginning in 1000 BCE, and a peak of between 200 and 300 million people in 1 BCE. After the start of the Industrial Revolution, during the 18 th century, the rate of population growth began to increase. By the end of the century, the world's population was estimated at just under 1 billion. At the turn of the 20 th century, the world's population was roughly 1. 6 billion. By 1940, this figure had increased to 2. 3 billion. Dramatic growth beginning in 1950 (above 1. 8% per year) coincided with greatly increased food production as a result of the industrialization of agriculture brought about by the Green Revolution. The world population is currently growing by approximately 74 million people per year. Current United Nations predictions estimate that the world population will reach 9. 0 billion around 2050

What are the Cause? 1. Accelerating birthrate: • Due to lack of awareness about the positive impact of using birth control method , there has been a steady growth in birth rate. 2. Decrease in infant mortality rate: • Improvement science and technology and wide usage of drugs has reduced the infant mortality rate. 3. Increase in life expectancy: • Due to improved living conditions, better hygiene and sanitation habits, better nutrition, health education etc. the average life expectancy of human population has improved significantly. 4. Increased immigration: • It happens when a large number arrive at an already populated place with intention to reside permanently.

EFFECTS OF POPULATION EXPLOSION SOCIAL EFFECTS: 1. Over population: It is a condition where population surges to a level that the earth cannot accommodate comfortably and poses a threat to the environment. 2. Unemployment: In developing countries like Pakistan with a backward economy and little scope for fruitful employment millions of people find no work to do. 3. Illiteracy: Population explosion is the key reason for illiteracy in Pakistan. Because of illitteracy people are not caring the environment. 4. Poor health: When there is high population growth people do not get adequate food and nutrition. Then they may suffer from poor health. 5. Law and Order Increased crime rate--------social evils 6. Inadequate Resources Malnutrition-------- Drinking water -------sanitation------slums

EFFECT ON ENVIRONMENT: More population means more mouths to eat food which requires more

EFFECT ON ENVIRONMENT: More population means more mouths to eat food which requires more agricultural production. More cultivable land has been made available by clearing forests and by reclaiming wet lands and ponds. Advanced agriculture requires utilization of more water, more fertilizers and more pesticides. And it demands more space to construct houses and availability of more consumer goods. It also requires more means of transport, more consumption of fossil fuels, and more pollution of land, air and water thus growth of population leads to pollution of land, water and air. Generation of waste: More people means more waste and less concern in proper disposal. Water Pollution: More Industries……. . Dumping of factory wastes Air Pollution: More Factories…. more pollution More Transport…. more pollution Green house effect----Global Warming----Ozone Depletion Deforestation: Land clearing for urbanization, industrialization etc. Extinction of Biodiversity: Over exploitation Habitat destruction

MEASURES TO CONTROL POPULATION EXPLOSION: Social measures Minimum age of marriage ------ Late marriage

MEASURES TO CONTROL POPULATION EXPLOSION: Social measures Minimum age of marriage ------ Late marriage Rising the status of women ------ Employment to women Spread of education Adoption Change in social outlook Social security Family planning Recreational facilities Awareness Incentives Economic Measures More employment opportunities. Development of agriculture and industry Standard of living
