Popsicle Bridges The Challenge n Attention aspiring engineers
Popsicle Bridges
The Challenge n Attention aspiring engineers! The state of Michigan needs your help. The Mackinaw Bridge is beginning to deteriorate and a new bridge must be built. Governor Granholm wants the most qualified team of builders to oversee the design and construction of the new bridge. Governor Granholm has issued a challenge to find the best bridge designers this country has to offer.
The Problem n You and a partner must make a bridge out of popsicle sticks and glue. n The bridge must be able to span a 16 inch gap. n The bridge must be able to hold the most amount of weight possible.
Rules n 1. The bridge can only be made out of 120 popsicle sticks and white glue. n 2. The bridge can be no longer than 20 inches. n 3. The bridge must use trusses to give support and rigidity. n 4. The bridge must have two sides, a top and a bottom. n 5. The bridge must be at least 4 inches tall and at least 4 inches wide. n 6. Popsicle sticks can overlap up to 2 ¼ inches.
Rubric n The bridges will be graded using a rubric.
Testing n Bridges will be tested until failure. n Each bridge will be loaded at the center using a chain and weight system or bridge tester depending on the semester n The bridge must be able to accommodate the testing apparatus.
Grading Items n 1. Most weight held n 2. Most efficient bridge n 3. Most aesthetically appealing bridge
Schedule Time is of the essence! n Your group must fill out a daily log (every day) to keep on track. n Everyday I will post on the screen “What you want to accomplish” n
