The beginning of Pop Art The 1950’s-1960’s
Where it started This movement started in 1950’s Britain with the Independent group who were apart of the institute of Contemporary Art. They wanted to create a movement that would boldly and clearly embody their generations enthusiasm and consumerism.

Andy Warhol started out as a magazine and ad illustrator and became a leading artist of the 60’s. He introduced Pop Art to the U. S. starting with his campbell soup painting.
Roy Lichtenstein When people think of Pop Art they are usually thinking about Lichtenstein art. Lichtenstein wanted to take the dumbest things he could find and give them a meaning or purpose. He utilized Ben-Day dots to create the textures and shading in his images. (Ben-Day dots: dots used in printing to make secondary colors and shading. )
Yayoi Kusama Yayoi utilizes dots and nets in her artwork to create surreal immersive art. Her whimsical style captures the carefree emotion of pop art. This piece, Repetitive Vision, really showcases her unique style. (Surreal: having the qualities of surrealism; bizarre. )
Takashi Murakami Takashi is inspired by Japanese painting, anime, and scifi. In 2002 he worked with Marc Jacobs to redesign the Louis Vuitton monogram. His Piece “Isle of the Dead” represents the 2011 tsunami and earthquake in Japan.
Keith Haring American artist Keith Haring was best known for his graffiti-inspired murals, which he first made in subway stations and later exhibited in museums. His art was simple lines with chaotic messages. (Mural: artwork on a wall, usually outdoors)
