Photo & caption: Pictures from the Past The Chincoteague ponies live most of the year on Assateague Island. Once a year they are rounded up, swam across the channel separating the two islands and herded through the streets to the carnival grounds where some colts are auctioned off to the public. The main herd reverse that process and live out a normal life until they are again rounded up a year later.

My Experience I did this project from the perspective of an elementary school student

My Experience I did this project from the perspective of an elementary school student since I actually teach a literary unit about the book, Misty of Chincoteague, with my 3 rd grade students. I felt that it might be a good culminating project for them and a way for me to incorporate both technology and a very basic lesson on citation. In the end, I found that finding pictures and video segments is not a problem. They could do this with some guidance. I might consider creating my own list of sites from which they could search so that they won’t come upon any inappropriate material. I found plenty of pictures by searching for “chincoteague ponies” or “chincoteague pony videos” in both Google and Yahoo Images, as well as in Alta. Vista Images, and Pic Search. All these tools were very easily searched with a simple search box and had dozens of results that were relevant. Videos weren’t quite as plentiful, but several excellent ones were available through You. Tube as well as news sites and government/research sites. I so enjoyed this project! If you would like to create your conceived project for 3 rd graders as your 10. 2 culminating project, this would be a good one. You could post your 3 rd grade pathfinder to the web. The video could be used as an attention grabber as well. (Grabbed my heart! ) What I found difficult was citing the images. I know this would be too hard for elementary students, but I think I could teach them to cite the website in a very simple way (not MLA). For me, citing the photographs wasn’t too difficult, using Noodle. Bib. I do still have some issues with choosing the categories as I work my way through it. I do too at times! The major issue, however, was whether to simply cite the website where I found the video clip (as part of a news story), or to search back until I found the primary source of it. Either would be acceptable. This is one of the reasons that MLA dropped the URL requirement. I ended up citing the website that had the video clip embedded, and then also searching out and citing the primary source of the video clip itself in an effort to provide credit to both the photographer/videographer and to the site where I found the article that included the clip. I like to go back to the original if I can determine that. In conclusion, I found that finding images on the Web is easy, but citing information from the Web has inherent difficulties that are hard to settle even with the use of online citation tools and the MLA handbook.
