FACTS ABOUT POMPEII § Location: 41 degrees North, and 15 degrees East § Pompeii got buried by Mount Vesuvius in A. D. 79 § The eruption occurred just one day after Vulcanalia, the festival of the Roman god of Fire. § Farmers living above buried Pompeii, would often dig up some evidence from the past. § Tourist attraction: 8 km away from Mt. Vesuvius
When Mt. Vesuvius erupted in A. D. 79, the nearby Roman town of Pompeii was buried under ash and rock. The ruined city remained hidden until 1748 when it was discovered by a searching engineer.
This is the “Garden of the fools”. Several "bodies" of men, women and children were found in the far corner. These people thought that Mt. Vesuvius was not going to erupt and when the time came they could not escape.
When the archaeologists dug underground they found old statues, sculptures, fountains, music pieces and human remains.
Remains of a famous Roman Temple named Basilica.
This sculpture of a dancing man was found buried in a very large yard. It is believed that the Romans named a house after this sculpture, and it was one of the largest houses in Pompeii.
